Captain Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery are embarking on one last journey next year, and today we got a first look at what they’re after.

Martin-Green’s Captain Burnham and her crew and looking to uncover a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well — dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.

The clip shows Burnham and Cleveland “Book” Booker (David Ajala) in a hostile world facing an even-more-hostile shape-shifting that unexpectedly possesses the ability to cloak. “We have to get past it,” the captain says. “See if you can communicate with it.” When Book does so with his mind, she asks, “Did you pick up anything?”

“Yeah,” he replies. “It’s really pissed off.”

And a few moments later, the thing’s back arrives.

Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz, Blu del Barrio and Callum Keith Rennie also stars. Season 5’s recurring guest stars are Elias Toufexis and Eve Harlow.

Star Trek: Discovery‘s five-season mission began in 2017 as the first series ordered for the late CBS All Access, launching the storied franchise on the streamer, and is among Paramount+’s longest-running series. Martin-Green made Star Trek history as the first Black woman to captain a ship, with the show setting other major firsts in LGBTQIA+ representation for both the franchise and TV in general.
