Star Trek spinoff Prodigy has been saved from cancellation by Netflix.

The animated series was axed by Paramount+ earlier this year amid a cull by the streamer, and was removed from its service in some regions.

The decision was a shock, given the show was initially ordered for two seasons – with the second yet to be released – and producers had hoped another network would pick it up.

Now, Netflix has stepped in to take on the show in the US and certain international markets, with the second season set to be released on the platform next year.

“Thank you to our incredible Star Trek: Prodigy fans, who championed not just a show, but a community that’s always been connected by the belief that we build a better future together,” producers Alex Kurtzman, and Dan and Kevin Hageman said in a statement (via Deadline).

“We set out to inspire you, but you inspired us. The team is still hard at work on the second season, and we can’t wait to share it with the amazing fans around the world.”

Paramount+ also axed shows Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, The Game and RuPaul's Queen of the Universe, explaining that – with their decision to combine Paramount+ and Showtime – they "are refining our content offering to deliver the best streaming experience for subscribers".

"The Paramount+ series Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Star Trek: Prodigy, Queen of the Universe and The Game have completed their runs on Paramount+ and will not be returning to the service.

"We want to extend our thanks to our tremendously talented cast and crew and our producing partners for their passionate work and dedication on these programmes, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavours."

Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 will be released on Netflix later this year, with season 2 set to premiere in 2024.
