EXCLUSIVE: Stephen Fry has signed on to narrate Kayleigh-Paige Rees’ Ukraine war feature documentary We Are Home, which is about families and children displaced due to the ongoing war.

The feature-length film, from Sanditon actor and producer Rees’ Raspberry Films, was shot entirely in Skole, Ukraine. Anton Chystiakov is the director.

It looks at how the war in Ukraine has led many children to leave their hometowns due to the fear of Russian attacks and destruction, while shining a light on their resourcefulness. Stories from several children from different parts of the country chart their fears, losses and new challenges, while reminding viewers of the power of the human spirit.

Broadcaster, comedian and actor Fry, whose storied career has included roles in Blackadder, Gosford Park and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows among others, provides the narration.

“I am honestly speechless and beyond honoured that Stephen said yes to narrating our documentary,” said Rees. “I wrote a personal letter to Stephen detailing the project itself and the incredible team we had attached to this project.”

The film doesn’t yet have distribution but is set for a festival run next year, Rees told Deadline.

Though the war in Ukraine technically began with the invasion of Crimea in 2014, Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022 has led to even more intensive and brutal fighting. Officials have reported death tolls and injuries number in the hundreds of thousands, and many families have been forced to leave their homes to seek safety.

Rees praised the We Are Home production team’s passion in getting the feature made. “We hope that the film will resonate with parents and families on what Ukrainian families are currently living through each and every day,” added Rees.

She was awarded Best Producer at this year’s National Film Awards in the UK for Prime Video feature Keep Calm and Carry On. Besides launching Raspberry in 2019, she is known for her acting role in ITV/PBS period drama co-production Sanditon.

Rees is represented by BBA Management.
