How does Sterling K. Brown stay in terrific, superhero-like shape for his multitude of acting roles in such popular TV and films as This Is Us and Black Panther?

“Peloton,” he simply told PEOPLE exclusively at the Hollywood premiere of his latest film, American Fiction, on Tuesday. “I got the bike. I got the treadmill. I love the workout classes.”

He added, “I try to eat well — a lot of protein in the morning. You have the carbs in the morning, so you can burn them all throughout the course of the day. Hydrate, a lot of water, good for the skin, good for the tears, good for everything.  And just try to be mindful.”

Another strategy he uses, he said, is not eating too much at once.

"Don't be making yourself so damn full all the time,” the star said. “Then you got to be unbuttoning your pants at the end of the meal. Get up and take a walk, big homie. There will be more food later on.”

Brown then explained “learning that” was so important. ”Growing up in what I think is a poverty mindset and the idea of don't be wasting, other people will be happy to have that, clean your plate — and that became the modus operandi. And then you walk around just bloated, and full, and heavy,” he said.

He added that “you're good when you're a kid because you can burn it off. And then you hit a certain age and you're like, ‘How come I ain't burning this stuff up the same way that I used to?’ ”

Brown also mentioned his two young children, Andrew and Amaré, with wife Ryan Michelle Bathe, as a motivation for staying healthy. ”I like to play with [them] and be able to enjoy. I want to be able to enjoy their kids. So it's not a vanity thing. It's like I want to keep on doing what I'm doing for a long time,” he said.

Brown’s new film, the satirical comedy American Fiction — which also stars Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross and Issa Rae — tells the story of a Black author whose book containing stereotypes that he originally wrote as a joke becomes an unexpectedly huge success.

Brown said that the movie’s depiction between show and business resonated with him. "Art and commerce are strange bedfellows,” he told PEOPLE.

He explained, "In television, there's a bit more of a committee sometimes than there is in film. But I've been blessed on a couple of occasions with some really cool TV shows where studios and networks said, 'Oh, you have a pretty solid vision, run with it.' So I've been blessed in that way.”

”As it relates to this film in particular, there's always this schism between how you see yourself and how the public sees you and you're eager to show them who you are,” the Emmy-winning actor continued. "But sometimes they're like, ‘No, but this is what you are.’ And you're like, ‘No. Guys, let me show you.’ And so just aching for that opportunity to show people is always sort of like the schism that I feel.”

Admittedly, Brown said, “Look, I get a pretty good label. [Like,] ‘You're a good guy, standup individual, dah, dah, dah, dah.’ And those roles are great.” But, the actor continued, “Those roles are not the totality of who I am or what I desire to play. So always sort of just getting other people to see me in another light is fun, when they actually take a chance and be like, ‘Okay, Sterling can play a multitude of things.’ ”

As far as his holiday plans go, Brown said he is taking his family to Disney World where the Space Mountain ride is on his itinerary. “That's one of the first ones I did when I was a kid. So we're going to do that,” he said.

He added, “I want some good food because after a while you get hot, you get tired, you want to have a nice meal, and then hopefully the kids, I can find somebody to babysit them and the wife and I can just walk around and have a little bit of fun on our own.”
