Storm Ciarán school closures list: strong winds and flooding continue

Storm Ciarán has continued to sweep across England with high winds and flooding.

The centre of the storm is slowly moving over the North Sea, but parts of Scotland and southern England will continue to see heavy rain on Friday and Saturday.

In Scotland, there are six flood alerts, while Wales has one severe warning for flooding on the River Ritec at Tenby.

However, almost all of those affected by storm-related power cuts have had their power restored.

The storm has prompted several school closures as a 'weather bomb' swept across southern England earlier this week.

Despite some schools reopening today, some are still affected. Here's what we know about disruption to education as a result of Storm Ciarán.

Which areas has the storm affected?

Storm Ciarán travelled across the Atlantic before hitting France, the Channel Islands, and eventually southern England.

A "major incident" has been declared in Jersey, with the Channel Islands bearing the brunt of the most severe weather conditions.

Some of the worst-hit areas on the mainland include Cornwall and Devon, where hundreds of homes are without power. London is also under a yellow weather warning.

Met Office meteorologist Brent Walker said, “Wind and rain warnings associated with Storm Ciarán are in force from tonight through until Friday, with further updates possible. These include amber warnings for wind for parts of south-west England on Thursday morning and the far south and south-east of England Thursday daytime and early evening.

He added: “Very strong winds are expected along southern coastal areas of England in particular, where gusts of 70mph to 80mph are possible, perhaps exceeding 85mph in a few exposed locations. Further inland, gusts could reach up to 50mph or 60mph.
