Angela Rippon has admitted rehearsals for Strictly Come Dancing are making her angry as she gets frustrated about getting the steps wrong.

And her professional partner Kai Widdrington has revealed what word the 78-year-old former newsreader exclaims whenever she messes up their dance.

Rippon confessed in a video on Widdrington's Instagram Stories: "Um, I'm enjoying doing it and I'm fine when I get the bits right.

"But I get very angry with myself when I absolutely muck it up and do it wrong."

Her dance partner teased: "You do, you say, 'Oh, knickers!' Knickers! It's very funny — but we're having fun!"

Rippon also admitted: "I'm exhausted. There are bits of me aching that I didn't know I had."

The former Nine O'Clock news anchor was the host of the original version of the dance competition show, Come Dancing, from 1988 to 1991.

And she famously dazzled with her high kicks when she performed with comedians Morecambe and Wise on The Morecambe & Wise Christmas special back in 1976.

Rippon may be the eldest of this year's celebrity contestants, but head judge Shirley Ballas recently revealed she can still do the splits.

Ballas told Metro: "If her dancing is as elegant as the way she stands and talks, then we’re in for a real treat."

She added: "She can do the splits, you know?"

Strictly 2023 launched last Saturday on BBC One with a pre-recorded show in which the celebrity contestants were introduced to their professional dance partners.
