Strictly Come Dancing spoilers follow.

Amanda Abbington has revealed that she wasn't bothered about keeping her Strictly Come Dancing casting a secret.

The Sherlock and Mr Selfridge actress was announced as one of the first three Strictly 2023 contestants on The One Show on Friday (August 4), where she was quizzed by presenters Alex Jones and Roman Kemp.

Alex and Roman's first question for Amanda was how she'd managed to keep her casting from leaking — but it turns out she hadn't adhered to the BBC's notorious secrecy.

"It's out, it's out now," Amanda said with a sigh of relief. "I didn't keep it a secret. I told everyone."

She jokingly added: "I even told the lady in my pharmacy, my local pharmacy, 'I'm doing Strictly — but don't tell anyone'."

Amanda had another hilarious answer when Roman asked why she'd want to take on Strictly when she already has a busy acting schedule.

"The man reason is to embarrass my two teenage children," Amanda quipped, before saying more seriously: "But also because I'm perimenopausal and I want to take the bull by the horns, and embrace [being] 51."

Amanda has two children with her former husband and Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman. She's currently engaged to former Britain's Got Talent contestant and escapologist Jonathan Goodwin.

The Critics' Choice Television Award-nominated actress was unveiled for Strictly Come Dancing alongside two fellow celebrity contestants: legendary BBC presenter Angela Rippon and West End star Layton Williams.

"I'm thrilled to have been asked to do Strictly," Amanda said in a statement. "I'm actually really shy and self-conscious, so this will be a great opportunity for me to overcome those things! Plus, I get to learn to dance, which I am incredibly excited about. I'm really looking forward to the training too.

"I'm quite competitive, as my family and friends will tell you. I can't wait to start!”

Strictly Come Dancing airs on BBC One, while spin-off Strictly: It Takes Two airs on BBC Two. Both shows are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
