On this episode of 1K Dream Room, host Will Taylor (@brightbazaar) heads to Brooklyn to give Ella’s sun-soaked studio an even brighter glow-up with a budget of $1,000 and only one day to finish.

Ella recently moved into the modern high-rise and wants to add more personality and coziness to her apartment, in addition to more spatial differentiation between the areas where she works, sleeps, and plays. With high ceilings and large windows, Ella’s studio has the potential to be the homey, multi-functional space of her dreams!

When it comes to making a space more versatile, multi-purpose furniture is key. To maximize storage without minimizing space, Will recommends versatile furniture such as a desk that doubles as a bookshelf with open sides to keep the area from feeling crowded. Another tip Will has for optimizing square footage is to build up instead of out by opting for shelving and storage that extends vertically.

Using the bookshelf as a partial barrier, Will arranges Ella’s living room in the nook where her bed used to be and adds an off-white braided jute rug and two ottomans that can function both as seating or a coffee table. Will also adds beige cushions to the plush blue sofa, providing a nice contrast in color and texture.

To create a separate zone for Ella’s bedroom, Will arranges an ivory full-size metal arch bed frame between two nightstands parallel to the floor-to-ceiling windows. The soft and muted colors of the bed’s queen powder pink bedding topped with a charcoal ruffle-trimmed throw blanket give the room an airy quality without feeling too sparse. For a finishing touch, Will disperses Ella’s growing plant collection throughout the sun-drenched space.

When it’s time for the big reveal, Ella is almost at a loss for words over her apartment’s new layout! She is especially excited about having specific areas designed for their intended purpose, particularly the living room, where her friends now have a place to sit that isn’t her bed. Overall, Ella loves the space’s versatility and can’t wait to see how she and her plants can grow with it.
