Sue Perkins has admitted her regret over misgendering House of the Dragon star Emma D'Arcy, saying it was a "shitty mistake".

The former Great British Bake Off host had been interviewing D’Arcy’s co-star Matt Smith at the fantasy show’s season two premiere when she referred to D’Arcy, who is non-binary and goes by the pronouns they/them, as "she".

Correcting Perkins’ mistake, Smith responded: "Aren’t they brilliant?"

After receiving backlash on social media from fans, Perkins took to X (formerly Twitter) to issue an apology, saying she feels "terrible" about the slip-up and "would never want to be disrespectful" towards D’Arcy.

"It was a shitty mistake. Had loads of stuff going on in my earpiece and so wasn't as focused as I should have been. No excuses though," she wrote.

"These things matter and I feel terrible about it. Am a massive fan of their work and would never want to be disrespectful x."

Following the success of the first season of House of the Dragon, D'Arcy will reprise their role as Rhaenyra Targaryen in season two, which premieres on June 17.

Season two will pick up shortly after the events of the first season's dramatic finale, which saw the death of a huge character.

The Blacks – led by Rhaenyra – will seek support for her claim to the Iron Throne. The Greens – led by Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) – will continue pushing for Rhaenyra's half-brother Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) to ascend to the throne after they usurped it for him in the previous season.

House of the Dragon season 2 premieres on June 17, airing on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK and on HBO and streaming service Max in the US. Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray.
