Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley Shares Cover of Memoir, “Walking Disaster ”(Exclusive)

The singer’s new book comes after Sum 41 announced their disbandment in 2023

Deryck Whibley is writing a book, and we're pretty sure it'll be all killer, no filler.

The founder and lead singer of pop punk band Sum 41 has shared the cover of his forthcoming memoir exclusively with PEOPLE. Walking Disaster, titled after the band's song of the same name, will be published by Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, this fall.

“Deryck’s fans know what a talented lyricist he is, so it should come as no surprise that his book is charming, gritty and deeply personal,” says the book’s editor, Rebecca Strobel, in a statement shared with PEOPLE.

In the book, the “Fat Lip” singer will take fans back to his early years growing up in Canada in a single-parent household. Whibley, who grew up in what he calls “difficult circumstances,” found solace in punk music and the songwriting of Kurt Cobain, which would eventually lead him to form Sum 41 in 1996.

Whibley will also share a more personal side on the page. He will “go deep” into his four-year marriage with musician Avril Lavigne (their divorce was finalized in 2010) and discuss “traumas and triumphs” involving figures within the music industry that he’s previously never disclosed.

Whibley spoke with PEOPLE in 2016 about his sobriety, and how music, as well as his wife Ariana Cooper, helped him throughout his journey.

"There’s a lot of things that are the same, and there are a lot of things that are different," he said at the time. "The lifestyle on the road is completely different from what it was before: for all of us, not just myself."

Whibley’s memoir announcement comes nearly a year after Sum 41 announced their disbandment in May 2023 on social media. The band’s eighth and final album, Heaven :x: Hell, will be released on March 29 via Rise Records. The U.S. leg of Sum 41’s final worldwide tour will kick off in Omaha, Nebraska in April.

"For now, we look forward to seeing all of you skumf—s on the road and are excited for what the future will bring for each of us," the band said in a collective statement. "Thank you for the last 27 years of Sum 41."

Walking Disaster will be published on Oct. 8 and is now available for pre-order.
