Sunday shows preview: GOP banks on Iowa; House divided on spending as shutdown looms
The upcoming Iowa Republican caucuses will likely be the focus of this week’s Sunday shows.
Iowa’s caucuses will happen on Monday, potentially amid extremely cold temperatures in the Hawkeye State. The state experienced a blizzard Friday that messed with some candidates’ schedules.
GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis is set to make an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” CNN’s “State of the Union” and “Fox News Sunday” this week. The Florida governor is currently polling at an average of 15.4 percent in the Iowa caucuses, according to The Hill/Decision Desk HQ’s GOP caucus polling average.
DeSantis went head to head with fellow candidate Nikki Haley in a final debate before next weeks’ caucuses on CNN Wednesday. The former U.N. ambassador went after DeSantis’ campaign management during the debate.
“The best way to tell about a candidate is to see how they run their campaign,” Haley said at one point, attacking DeSantis. “He has blown through $150 million. … I don’t even know how you do that.”
“He has nothing to show for it. He’s spent more money on private planes than he has on commercials trying to get Iowans to vote for him. If you can’t manage a campaign, how are you going to manage a country?” she added.
Haley will make an appearance on “Fox News Sunday” this week. Gov. Chris Sununu (R-N.H.), who has endorsed Haley, will also make an appearance on “Face the Nation”
The House has recently been in turmoil over a bipartisan spending deal that Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-La.) announced last weekend. The deal did not go down well with conservatives and they staged a floor revolt earlier this week. A meeting of hard-line conservatives and the recently-minted speaker occurred Thursday, in which the conservatives tried to convince Johnson on a different spending plan.
However, Johnson told reporters Friday that the “top-line agreement remains.”
“We are getting our next steps together, and we are working toward a robust appropriations process. So, stay tuned for all that,” he said.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), an opponent of the bipartisan deal, will appear on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Features” this week.
“I am a NO to the Johnson Schumer budget deal,” she wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “This $1.6 Trillion dollar budget agreement does nothing to secure the border, stop the invasion, or stop the weaponized government targeting Biden’s political enemies and innocent Americans.”
