V. Sundram Moorthy has stepped down as the national football team’s head coach after almost two years on the job.

Sundram, 52, has agreed to leave his post by mutual consent, said a statement by the Football Association of Singapore on Monday (9 April).

During his stint, the Lions were ranked 173th in the world in October last year – their lowest FIFA ranking ever.

Last month, the team posted their first victory in 16 months when they defeated the Maldives 3-2 at the National Stadium, breaking a 14-match winless streak. But four days later, they lost 1-0 away to Taiwan in an Asian Cup qualifier.

Sundram, who assumed the role in May 2016, said in the statement, “It has been an incredible learning experience for me and I have fond memories of working with the players and my colleagues at the FAS.

“I am also grateful to the support given by the FAS Council, the players as well as the fans, and I wish the team the very best as they go on to prepare for the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup later this year.”

Thanking Sundram for his contributions to the team, FAS President Lim Kia Tong said, “The role of the Head Coach of our National Team is a demanding task and we recognise that Sundram gave his all in that role.”

The FAS said it will make an announcement in due course on Sundram’s replacement.
