The 40-year-old man accused of killing a cat in Yishun has been granted bail.

Lee Wai Long, who is currently facing one charge of throwing a domestic adult male Mackerel Tabby from the 13th floor of block 115B Yishun Ring Road on October 30 2015, had his bail set at S$10,000 and his travel documents impounded.

His lawyer, Josephus Tan, told the media after the hearing at the State Courts on Tuesday (19 Jan) that his client’s family will be putting up the bail.

Lee, who had been in remand at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for investigation, appeared calm as he appeared before District Judge Christopher Goh.

Wearing a red t-shirt, Lee was seen talking to his counsel after the trial was over.

The prosecution for the case, led by Lee Zu Zhao, had requested for a further four weeks to access the investigation papers put up by IMH.

Speaking to the media after the trial, Tan said that both defence and prosecution would need to look into the the report before deciding on the next step.

“His father will be posting bail and we are happy because he can be home for the Lunar New Year celebrations, ” said Tan.

Lee’s case is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on 15 February.

If found guilty of the charge, Lee will face a jail term of up to 18 months or a fine amounting to S$15,000 or both.

Lee was charged with animal cruelty on 29 December, following a series of cat killings in Yishun over the past three months, during which 19 cats had been found dead or severely wounded.

Some of the felines were discovered with gouged out eyes and mutilated limbs. One was strangled, while another was found floating in a pond next to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital on 26 December.

A dead cat was also found in Yishun on 30 Dec last year, a day after Lee was charged in court.
