Suzanne Somers was buried in a one-of-a-kind pair of shoes that celebrated her love story.

Somers’ husband Alan Hamel, 87, shared with PEOPLE that the Three's Company star, who  died on Oct. 15 from breast cancer, was laid to rest in a pair of shoes that had a sentimental tie to the pair — Timberland boots that he purchased for her and had customized with heartfelt handwritten notes.

PEOPLE obtained the photos of special shoes, which featured the words “in love forever” written in red block letters on the left boot, along with a sentimental drawing of a man and woman next to each other on top of the words “love.” The drawings appeared to be Picasso-like, with the faces of people drawn with squiggly lines and decorated with pink and red colors.

The other side of the boot also featured the words “twice a day” written in block red letters, a cheeky reference to the couple's intimacy.

On the right boot, the words “we are one” were written alongside an arrow pointing to the front of the shoe which showed a sketch of what appeared to be different red lines coming out of a black and blue spiral.

Hamel noted that he had originally purchased the shoes so she would have something to hike in and had drawn “a few words that represented our life to some degree and made them very personal to Suzanne."

The Canadian entertainer shared with PEOPLE that the couple, who resided beside the mountains in both Malibu and Palm Springs for 50 years, developed an “early morning routine” in which they would hike “to the top” of the mountains “where there was a creek and a large flat rock in the middle of the creek."

"By the time we got there, which was about a two-hour hike, the rock had been warmed by the morning sun," says Hamel. "We would have our lunch on the rock and then take a one-hour nap on the rock and then hike back down and go to work.”

At the time of the actress' death, she was surrounded by Hamel, her son Bruce and other members of her immediate family. She died one day before her 77th birthday, and several members of the family had gathered to celebrate her birthday, while others drove in on the day of.
