Swiatek vs Bencic LIVE! Wimbledon 2023 latest score and updates from Centre Court

Swiatek vs Bencic LIVE!

Iga Swiatek continues her bid for a first Wimbledon title as she plays Belinda Bencic on Centre Court this afternoon. The world number one has already matched her best run at SW19, but will be eyeing much more as she looks to reach the second week.

Petra Martic was Swiatek’s toughest test so far, though the Pole dropped only seven games in that third-round match. With Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka now beginning to hit top form, it is Swiatek’s turn to make a latest statement of intent.

Bencic has never made it beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon, but beat Swiatek when they met at the US Open two years ago and is certainly capable of causing the top seed big problems. The 26-year-old swept past Magda Linette in the previous round, having already knocked out Danielle Collins and Britain’s Katie Swan. Goodbye!

21:03 , Dom Smith

Thank you for joining us this evening. It was quite the affair, and at the end of it, Belinda Bencic is out — and Iga Swiatek has reached the quarter-finals at SW19 for the first time in her career!

Ciao!

So the top seed survives

20:46 , Dom Smith

That was one hell of a battle. Swiatek was pushed all the way by 13th seed and world No14 Belinda Bencic on Centre Court, but the Pole is made of tough stuff and came through it in the end.

Swiatek vs Svitolina

20:41 , Dom Smith

...And it has literally JUST been announced that she will face 2019 semi-finalist Elina Svitolina at that stage.

Svitolina just beat Victoria Azarenka in an incredible three-setter.

Swiatek through to her first Wimbledon quarter-final

20:38 , Dom Smith

Swiatek is into the quarter-final at Wimbledon for the first time on what she calls her “best year on grass”.

Her opponent is being decided now in a thrilling final-set tiebreak between Elina Svitolina and Victoria Azarenka!

Swiatek speaking about her victory

20:28 , Dom Smith

Swiatek says: “It wasn’t easy obviously. I don’t know if I’ve ever come back before from match point down in my career.

“I was playing without regrets. I am happy that I can continue.”

GAME, SET AND MATCH SWIATEK

20:25 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 7-6(2), 6-3 Bencic

There is a smattering of excitement as Bencic grabs the first point on Swiatek’s serve, and then a lot more when Swiatek makes an uncharacteristic double fault to bring up 0-30.

Yet Swiatek arrows a dart of a serve at Bencic for 15-30, and is level when Bencic overhits it on a super rally.

Then a simply stunning forehand winner into the corner from Swiatek, who earns HER first match point.

She takes it with a twisting forehand. Big pump of the fists.

Bencic keeps it interesting

20:21 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 7-6(2), 5-3 Bencic

Bencic is serving to stay in the match and holds her nerve well. First there is excellent serving. Then she keeps ahead of Swiatek on the final rally, with the world No1 going long.

Game Bencic. Swiatek now serving for the match.

Swiatek a game away now!

20:16 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 7-6(2), 5-2 Bencic

Slightly flat atmosphere in Centre Court at the moment. Not much cheering going on whoever wins the point.

Swiatek turns 0-15 down into 15-15 with a 111mph serve.

Bencic nets and Swiatek has taken it.

Bencic still battling on

20:11 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 7-6(2), 4-2 Bencic

Bencic pulls off a hold that is vital at this stage of the match, serving excellently — particularly with the third point to go 40-0 up — until a double fault makes it 40-15.

Swiatek nets on the final point. Bencic still in it.

Is Swiatek pulling away?

20:07 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 7-6(2), 4-1 Bencic

Swiatek finds herself in a spot of bother when Bencic goes 15-30 up, but the serving Pole is soon back on track.

Bencic goes just long and Swiatek has the game. Not even Hawkeye can help the Swiss here.

SWIATEK BREAKS

20:03 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 7-6(2), 3-1 Bencic

Swiatek misses the baseline as Bencic takes a 30-15 lead.

Wonderful winner from Bencic as she sends Swiatek scurrying this way and that before firing down the line.

Double fault. Deuce.

But there’s trouble down the road for the Swiss as Swiatek breaks.

Swiatek pushed hard but holds again

19:56 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 7-6(2), 2-1 Bencic

After aborting a ball toss and apologising, Swiatek watches as Bencic can’t return her serve. 30-0 to the world No1.

Swept home by Bencic into an open court for 30-15.

Swiatek produces her first double fault of the match to take the game to deuce, at which point Bencic finds the line in an overall extraordinary rally.

Swiatek holds.

Bencic holds to love now too!

19:46 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 7-6(2), 1-1 Bencic

A quartet of strong serves get Bencic in business right from the off. A hold to love from her too.

Brilliant serving at the start of this deciding set.

Hold to love for Swiatek

19:44 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 7-6(2), 1-0 Bencic

You can tell that Iga Swiatek is desperate to get this match won now. She is jogging on the spot in anticipation between each point.

She holds to love. Ominous if you’re Bencic.

Swiatek takes the second set on a tiebreak

19:37 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 7-6(2) Bencic

Swiatek gets a mini break by working the first point well, but then loses it by netting. And then she misses (just) to offer one to Bencic instead. But Bencic nets. And again. Five points: all of them against serve.

Swiatek is 4-2 up when the players change ends.

Thumping winner from Swiatek for 6-2.

It ends with a double fault. Poor from Bencic, really. One set all.

Swiatek saves TWO match points

19:29 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 6-6 Bencic

There’s a jarring miss-hit from Swiatek on the first point of her service game, offering up a free point for reigning Olympic champion Bencic, but Swiatek replies with a brilliant winner for 15-15.

It proves a game of stunning points as Bencic wins the third by top-spinning a line winner past Swiatek.

Swiatek then fires long and serves up two MATCH POINTS to 13th seed Bencic.

The Pole is firing on all cylinders now because she simply has to be, and duly saves the first. And, naturally, the second.

Bencic goes long to offer up advantage Swiatek, and she takes it. Tiebreak.

Bencic a break away from victory!

19:21 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 5-6 Bencic

On serve, Bencic threatens to throw away a 30-0 lead with a double fault, but a stellar serve immediately follows that, allaying any fears she might crumble at the worst possible moment.

Swiatek fires into the net. Game Bencic.

Swiatek holds firm

19:17 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 5-5 Bencic

Swiatek signals her intent at the beginning of this game with a lovely dipping line winner. Then an ace.

There’s then disappointment around Centre Court when Bencic swings a cross-court backhand into the tramlines.

Swiatek takes the game.

Bencic leads 5-4

19:12 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 4-5 Bencic

Swiatek hands the world No14 the first point when she overhits beyond the baseline, and then nets needlessly.

But the Pole responds by tucking into the corner, darting to the net, and meeting Bencic’s desperate return with a flat overhead smash. Nice.

Then long from Bencic. 30-30.

Swiatek nets, then Bencic finds a winner, and it’s another hold from the Swiss.

Level again in the second set

19:09 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 4-4 Bencic

Stunning winner from Swiatek to get the game going, after a first serve that admittedly looked weak to me.

Equally brilliant strike down the line from Bencic to turn 30-0 into 30-15.

Swiatek finishes Bencic off with an ace. It’s 4-4.

Bencic ahead for the first time in the second set

19:04 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 4-3 Bencic

You can tell when Iga Swiatek is scared of defeat because she plays some of her best tennis in those moments.

Bencic goes 15-0 up but Swiatek comes out swinging and forces Bencic to net.

The Swiss nudges herself back in front, but then nets again for 30-30.

“Come on Belinda”, cry some spectators. Hard to tell whether they want to be home quickly or actually want her to win...

Ace. 40-30. Unreturned serve. Game.

Bencic breaks back!

19:00 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 3-3 Bencic

Nice winner after a well-crafted point by Bencic, who then goes long when Swiatek pushes her to the back of the court.

Then a magnificent winner on the line from Swiatek, who it starts to appear is living up to her billing as world No1 in this second set so far. The same could not be said in the first.

But hold on. Bencic responds with a winner of her own for 30-30, and then another pearler to earn a break point.

She takes it. Three games all.

Bencic holds

18:55 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 3-2 Bencic

Bencic needs to hold every service game to win this set now, and she does so here despite Swiatek fighting back to 40-30.

Swiatek to serve next, looking to go 4-2 ahead in the second set.

Swiatek holds serve

18:54 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 3-1 Bencic

Excellent winner from Swiatek for 40-15 as she changes it up from a few shots to the right by going left.

Swiatek takes the game.

Bencic off the mark in the second set

18:45 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 2-1 Bencic

It’s a fine, fine winner down the line from Swiatek who is finding some momentum in this second set now.

And another, this time to the right of the court, to make it 40-30.

But Bencic serves decisively for 2-1. She’s off the mark in the second set.

Swiatek backs up her break

18:42 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 2-0 Bencic

Swiatek with a thunderous backhand winner to bring up 30-0 on serve. Is she starting to get into her groove?

The Pole takes the game to back up her break last time out.

Swiatek breaks!

18:37 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7, 1-0 Bencic

Swiatek goes long on the first point and slams the ball cross-court in anger, but Bencic then misses on the next rally.

Bencic hits it too hard and goes 15-30 down as a result, then 15-40, before Bencic saves one of those break points.

But Swiatek arrows in a winner and has broken Bencic — the first break of the match — in the first game of the second set.

FIRST SET BENCIC!

18:28 , Dom Smith

Swiatek (4)6-7 Bencic

Quite a poor miss from Swiatek as she loses a mini-break with the first point of the tiebreak. She then goes 2-0 down on the tiebreak in a long rally despite the net benefitting her twice.

Excellent winner from Bencic to make it 3-0.

Swiatek serves well but her second shot is low into the net. It’s a full break now for Bencic who is 4-0 up... until Swiatek gets one back with an unreturned serve. It’s 5-1 Bencic as the players change ends.

Fabulous ace down the centre for 6-1. Bencic now has five set points.

Swiatek saves the first with a strong serve, and the second as Bencic goes long. Then another with a magnificently well-worked point, Swiatek pushing Bencic to the very extremes. 6-4.

Bencic serves, Swiatek misses her reply, challenges, but it was indeed out. Bencic with the first set.

Tiebreak

18:19 , Dom Smith

Swiatek 6-6 Bencic

Bencic is 15-0 up when she double-faults again to bring Swiatek into the game.

But an ace is the perfect response and puts Bencic ahead once more. A weak second serve is then punished by Swiatek.

Winner down the line from Bencic as Swiatek goes the other way and is visibly frustrated at being outfoxed. Swiatek then goes long, meaning it’s a tiebreak to decide the first set!

Swiatek 6-5 up now

18:14 , Dom Smith

Swiatek 6-5 Bencic

At 40-0 Swiatek, Bencic finds a lovely cross-court winner.

But Bencic tries a drop-shot from Swiatek’s next serve and it’s a bad decision.

It skids into the net and ensures Swiatek holds her service game again.

Important hold from Bencic

18:10 , Dom Smith

Swiatek 5-5 Bencic

Bencic wins the first point, but only after the No1 seed makes her do one more shot than she really ought to have needed.

She is then left slapping her thigh in anger when she double-faults for 15-30.

Incredible point to follow which Swiatek takes which a smash.

Two set points for the Pole.

But Bencic saves the first via an unforced error from Swiatek and the second by curving the ball round Swiatek for an amazing shot.

Excellent winner from Bencic. At risk of being broken at the critical moment, she holds firm.

Swiatek holds

18:02 , Dom Smith

Swiatek 5-4 Bencic

Swiatek nudges 30-0 ahead on serve by cannoning an ace right down the T, but she’s then beaten at the net by another brilliant Bencic lob onto the line. Amazing accuracy from the Swiss.

The world No14 then hits a winner down the line to level the game.

Swiatek wins the game when Bencic challenges her shot, which was called out. It was indeed out, but that is the tightest Hawkeye call I have ever seen. Millimetres in it!

Amazing shot from Bencic

17:57 , Dom Smith

Swiatek 4-4 Bencic

In a match earlier today, the umpire had to remind spectators not to pop open bottles of Champagne while players were serving. The things you never knew you had to remind someone.

Well, it’s happened again here.

An excellent serve from Bencic brings up 40-15, and she then wins the game with a truly magnificent lob which hits the line.

Strong hold from Swiatek

17:52 , Dom Smith

Swiatek 4-3 Bencic

The big-hitting world No1 has a monstrous serve and uses it to good effect once more.

Bencic returns none of her serves here. Strong holm from the Pole.

On serve still

17:50 , Dom Smith

Swiatek 3-3 Bencic

Bencic is pushed in this game but comes through it with a nice winner.

No breaks of serve yet in this match.

Excellent from Swiatek

17:45 , Dom Smith

Swiatek 3-2 Bencic

Swiatek starting to find her rhythm here. And, indeed, the far corners of the court. She finds the corner for the first point.

Really odd moment in the second, when Swiatek’s serve clips the edge of the frame on Bencic’s racket. It barely makes contact. Was the Swiss looking somewhere else?

Swiatek holds to love by finding the line. Perfect.

Bencic holds

17:42 , Dom Smith

Swiatek 2-2 Bencic

Bencic gets back from 0-30 down to parity before netting poorly.

Good serve Bencic. Deuce.

Bencic gets the advantage and then wins a marathon rally when Swiatek can only find the net.

Back underway

17:38 , Dom Smith

Appeared that the medical time-out was for a blister on Swiatek’s foot.

Not too long a time-out. Back underway.

Medical time-out for Swiatek

17:36 , Dom Smith

Iga Swiatek is now receiving a medical time-out. No idea what it’s for just yet.

Swiatek with a confident hold of serve

17:34 , Dom Smith

Swiatek 2-1 Bencic

There are murmurs as Bencic nets poorly with the first point. Then there is a cheer from Swiatek as her ace pings off the line and the dust comes up.

Bencic goes long for 40-0 Swiatek. Winner. Game Swiatek.

Thrilling game

17:31 , Dom Smith

Swiatek 1-1 Bencic

Double fault is not the best start from Bencic, who then goes 0-30 down with a baseline miss.

Nervy again as Bencic double-faults for a second time in the game.

Bencic gets it back to 30-40, when Swiatek can only find the tramlines, and then to deuce.

After a great serve, Bencic is one point away from a real turnaround hold of serve. Swiatek nets. Bencic gets it.

Swiatek gets us underway

17:26 , Dom Smith

Swiatek 1-0 Bencic

Brilliant first point of the match from Belinda Bencic, who finds a winner down the line.

Swiatek then nets with the third point after Bencic fires a brutal shot cross-court.

Unreturned serve brings up 30-30, before Swiatek moves ahead in the game for the first time by staying in a long rally with a lob which hits the line before Bencic nets.

Winner Swiatek. She takes the game.

Warm-up

17:20 , Dom Smith

Swiatek exuded cool as she came out onto Centre Court with big headphone on.

She’s ditched them now, fortunately.

One minute until play.

Swiatek feeling confident

17:14 , Dom Smith

I spoke to Iga Swiatek after her second-round victory against Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain. At that time, there had been so much rain that there were still plenty of first-round matches to come, yet Swiatek was already thinking about the third round.

“I feel really confident”, the No1 seed said. “I was able to kind of do everything tactically as I wanted to, as my coach wanted me to do, in the first and second round.

“I'm happy that my matches were scheduled under the roof, so I always was certain that it's going to actually happen.”

Game, set and match Rublev!

16:57 , Dom Smith

It’s go, go, go on Centre Court for Swiatek versus Bencic as Rublev has just won a gruelling five-set battle against Bublik.

Swiatek and Bencic next up. They’ll arrive on court shortly!

Stand by...

16:51 , Matt Verri

Rublev is 5-3 up in the fifth set on Centre Court.

Bublik serving to stay in the match - he pulled it back from two sets down but it looks like he could come up just short.

Reminder that Swiatek vs Bencic follows this one on Centre.

Good memories for Bencic

16:37 , Matt Verri

It was Bencic who came out on top when she played Swiatek at the US Open two years ago.

A straight-sets win for the Swiss star, on her way to reaching the quarter-finals. She’ll be taking plenty of confidence from that match, even if Swiatek has improved since then. A lot.

The Pole has won three of the six Grand Slams to be played since that tournament...

To a fifth we go!

16:24 , Matt Verri

Bublik is not done yet. Not by a long way.

He’s taken it to a fifth on Centre, Rublev furious with himself as he trudges back to the chair.

For Swiatek and Bencic, more waiting around!

Bencic full of praise for Swiatek

16:15 , Matt Verri

Belinda Bencic believes Iga Swiatek moves better on the tennis court than anyone else in the history of the women’s game,

“I think it’s her movement, absolutely,” Bencic replied when asked what impressed her most about Swiatek’s game. “I think no one has ever moved like that in the woman’s game like her.”

She added: “I’m really up for the challenge. I’m excited to play her. I think I’m a player that I play well against, you know, top players.”

Bublik having fun!

16:06 , Matt Verri

Bublik continues to battle away on Centre Court, with his usual array of drop shots, lobs and general madness.

It’s 4-4 in the fourth set, the 23rd seed will fancy his chances of taking this to a fifth. Rublev being made to work very hard for this.

Swiatek: The pressure is off

15:54 , Matt Verri

Iga Swiatek insists she is feeling “relaxed” at Wimbledon, with the pressure off after victory at the French Open.

That was a fourth Grand Slam title for the world number one, and it has given her the freedom to enjoy the final two Slams of the year.

“I do feel more relaxed,” Swiatek said after her third-round win.

“I think also because I won Roland Garros and I feel like after that the pressure is a little bit off because I reached my goal kind of for the season. I don’t have to think about anything else other than playing.”

He takes it!

15:43 , Matt Verri

Swiatek and Bencic can take a seat. Going to a fourth set on Centre Court!

Bublik takes the tie-break 8-6, stunning forehand pass down the line and Rublev just stands there in shock. Ball lands JUST inside the baseline.

Game. On.

(AFP via Getty Images)

Well then...

15:41 , Matt Verri

Bublik looked certain to take it a fourth set, as he brought up three set points in the tie-break.

Rublev had saved all three though, it’s 6-6 at the changeover. Drama on Centre!

The wait goes on

15:30 , Matt Verri

Iga Swiatek and Belinda Bencic could be out very shortly, but they might have to wait a bit longer.

Andrey Rublev two sets up on Centre, but he is now serving to stay in the third. Alexander Bublik 6-5 up and guaranteed at least a tie-break, he’s not done yet.

Would be nice if we could have one day without having to keep an eye on the curfew.

Earlier today...

15:22 , Matt Verri

Mirra Andreeva continued her superb run as she beat Anastasia Potapova to reach the fourth round.

The 16-year-old came through qualifying and is now into the second week at Wimbledon - but she still isn’t ready to say hello to Andy Murray!

Think her chance might have gone, after his defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas...

Bencic tested

15:12 , Matt Verri

It hasn’t been quite so routine for Bencic.

The 14th seed beat Britain’s Katie Swan in the first round, before edging past Danielle Collins in a final-set tie-break on Thursday.

Bencic’s best performance of the tournament came in the third round, as she lost just four games in a dominant win over Magda Linette.

More of that this afternoon and we have a real game on our hands.

Comfortable for Swiatek

15:02 , Matt Verri

There’s been very little to trouble Swiatek so far during the tournament.

The world number one dropped a total of just six games across her opening two matches, before easing to a 6-2 7-5 victory over Petra Martic last time out.

Swiatek has never previously made it beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon - big chance to improve on that this afternoon!

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

Get ready...

14:54 , Matt Verri

Swiatek and Bencic might want to step up their warm-ups.

Rublev is now two sets up on Bublik, taking the second 6-3 and he is closing in on the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Might not be long until focus shifts to the second match of the day on Centre...

Centre Court schedule

14:46 , Matt Verri

Rublev vs Bublik is first up on Centre Court this afternoon - it’s Rublev who currently leads that one. The seventh seed took the first set 7-5, with it still on serve early in the second.

Swiatek and Bencic will follow that, before Djokovic faces Hurkacz this evening in the final match on Centre.

Plenty to look forward to!
