Sydney Sweeney bought back her family's home after financial struggles forced them to sell

Kelly Clarkson responded with awe: “You’re like a Hallmark movie!”

Sydney Sweeney brought wholesome tidings to The Kelly Clarkson Show, just in time for the holiday season.

After bonding with the daytime host over Christmas pajamas and a shared love of movie marathons, the Anyone But You actress told Kelly Clarkson about the very tangible impact that success has had on her life, Namely, the fact that she was able to buy back her family home, which they previously sold after a period of financial hardship.

“My great-grandma had this beautiful house,” Sweeney explained. “It was a two bedroom, cute little house that they lived in. My grandma was born in it. My mom was born in it, and then as the kids got older, they built on the property another home.”

She continued, “And when my great-grandpa passed away and my great-grandma got old, they just couldn’t afford to keep it anymore.”

“Yeah, the upkeep,” Clarkson replied, to which Sweeney agreed, “Yeah, it was a lot.”

While Sweeney has been acting onscreen since 2009, her career gained significant momentum after a lead role in Netflix’s teen dramedy, Everything Sucks. She soon went on to star in The Handmaid’s Tale, Sharp Objects, Euphoria, The White Lotus, and more. Thanks to that continued success, she was able to give back to her family.

“Last year I called up the owners and was like, I wanna buy my great-grandma’s house back,” Sweeney concluded. “And it’s really cool too. My granny still lives in the house next door, so, I’m neighbors with my granny now.”

An awestruck Clarkson then exclaimed, “You’re like a Hallmark movie.”

Sweeney previously opened up about her family’s financial struggles in a November interview with Women’s Health, detailing the sacrifices made so she could pursue acting.

“I started when I was 11, 12 years old, and it was only in the last few years that everyone was actually interested in talking to me,” she said. “There was a good eight, nine years where no one was saying yes. It was just me pushing through all the no’s.”

During that period, Sweeney said she watched her parents “lose a lot.”

“We filed for bankruptcy, and they lost their house back home on the lake,” she recalled. “We couldn’t afford life in L.A. It was hard because they were supporting my dream, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I didn’t want to fail them. No matter how long it took, I was going to be in a TV show or a movie, and I wasn’t going to stop until something happened.”
