SZA Honored with Award at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony: 'Beyond My Wildest Dreams'

The "Kill Bill" singer received the Hal David Starlight Award, which celebrates young songwriters making an impact in the music industry

SZA has another award under her belt — this time for her songwriting!

The singer, 34, received the Hal David Starlight Award at the Songwriters Hall of Fame 2024 Induction and Awards Gala on Thursday, June 13, which recognizes her impact on the music industry through her original songwriting.

"I'm just beyond all of my wildest dreams," SZA said in her acceptance speech, later adding that the honor "basically validates" all aspects of her career, including songwriting.

"I'm just so grateful," she said. "Thank you for seeing me."

"I swear, I'll be like, 'Oh I wrote this and I wrote that,'" SZA said. "And [people would] be like, 'OK,' especially if you're a woman, especially if you're a Black woman. So to win this... It just means the world."

After her speech, SZA performed an acoustic rendition of "Snooze." Songwriter Nile Rodgers presented her with the award.

This marks the latest in a well-decorated string of award show appearances for the “Good Days” performer: Following the release of her global-smash album SOS, she’s collected three Grammys, four iHeartRadio Music Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, and a Brit Award — not to mention over a dozen more nominations.

SZA joins the company of prolific past Hal David Starlight Award honorees, including the likes of Taylor Swift, Post Malone, Ed Sheeran and Lil Nas X.

At the gala, which took place at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City, several artists were welcomed into the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame, including Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, producer and rapper Timbaland, and R.E.M.’s Mike Mills and Michael Stipe.

The night featured performances and presentations by several more stars, including Missy Elliott, Jason Isbell, Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban.

SZA will have the opportunity to further pad out her hefty collection of trophies this summer, next at the 2024 BET Awards on June 30, where she is a five-time nominee — including a nod for her feature on “Rich Baby Daddy” with her ex and 2011 Hal David Starlight Award recipient Drake.

On the heels of her SOS Tour — which grossed $95.5 million and sold 674,000 tickets in 2023, according to Billboard — the “Snooze” singer has performed at several festivals throughout the summer, including a headlining slot at 2024 Governors Ball last weekend. She next will take her act to Milwaukee, Wis., for Summerfest, before hopping across the pond to perform at the British Summer Time Hyde Park concert series in London.

Outside of the music industry, SZA is also set to make her first feature-length acting debut in a buddy comedy opposite Keke Palmer, produced by Issa Rae at TriStar Pictures.
