T.J. Holmes Admits to Being 'Angry as Hell' After “GMA3” Exit but Thanks Them for Pairing Him with Amy Robach

Holmes explained his ambivalence towards ABC News during the latest podcast episode of ‘Amy & T.J.’

When T.J. Holmes thinks about his time at ABC News, it’s with mixed feelings.

During the most recent episode of their podcast Amy & T.J., which was filmed live in New York City on June 10, Holmes, 46, expressed gratitude to ABC News despite him and Amy Robach parting ways with the news organization and their roles at GMA3: What You Need to Know  in January 2023 following the revelation that the two were dating.

Although the couple’s off-camera relationship did not violate policy, ABC News said at the time their relationship posed an “internal and external disruption.”

"After several productive conversations with Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes about different options, we all agreed it's best for everyone that they move on from ABC News. We recognize their talent and commitment over the years and are thankful for their contributions," an ABC spokesperson said in a statement at the time.

On the podcast, Holmes said of their exit: "We do want to say ‘Thank You’ to ABC News. We'll be honest that we were angry as hell at ABC News for quite a while, but only with time and with perspective, we can appreciate them recognizing something in us, putting us together in the first place, set us on a course to get better health and happiness to where we can come out of it now healthier and happier than we've ever been in our adult lives.”

Holmes and Robach, 51, weathered a media firestorm once their relationship became public in November 2022. They were scrutinized for their working relationship amid their respective marriages, though both were privately separated from their spouses. Holmes and his ex Marilee Fiebig settled their divorce several weeks after the pair’s relationship came to light, while Robach finalized her divorce from Andrew Shue in March, according to Page Six.

“When you're going through it, it never ever seems like you're gonna come out of it on the other side,” Holmes said. “It never ever feels like this is actually going to be a good thing for you later. We could never imagine that them putting us together in the first place would put us in a position to where they want to fire us.”

In the months that followed, Holmes and Robach continued on, becoming more visible as a couple. They proudly made their red carpet debut as a couple at iHeartRadio's Jingle Ball 2023, the same month they launched their podcast Amy & T.J.

The podcast has become a platform for the pair to discuss their relationship on their own terms and to flex their interviewing skills with guests like Gavin Rossdale, Larsa Pippen, Rachel Platten and Lisa Niemi Swayze.

Despite the controversy, the professional setbacks they’ve faced and “missteps” they’ve made around disclosing their relationship, Holmes and Robach are in a good place. During an Amy & T.J. episode in February, Robach spoke of her desire to elope to Fiji for her third wedding. In April, the couple discussed engagement rings and the topic of marriage, although they acknowledged they haven’t decided whether they’ll tie the knot.

At the June 10 event, Holmes and Robach made it a point to thank family, friends and other supporters.

“The journey that's brought us here in front of you, we can be grateful for,” Holmes said. “When that rare thing happens in — maybe it's love — but when it's right there in front of you, life is too short, you have to go for it.”
