Every year, each NFL team selects six players to wear the captain’s badge. This not only signifies them as leaders of their teams but also proves that they have the experience, mentality, and leadership necessary to be an NFL Captain. The Buffalo Bills’ situation is slightly different as head coach Rex Ryan has a history of changing captains each week depending on the opponent and the weeks’ events.

Even though the Bills situation is not ordinary, let us anyways take a look at the six players on the Bills roster that deserve to wear the captain badge each week, regardless how rex feels that day.

Tyrod Taylor

Multiple reports coming out of Minicamp have said that Tyrod Taylor has really stepped up his game and has demanded attention as the number one guy in this offense, something Buffalo has been missing for some time. With the Bills’ finally situated with a capable quarterback, hopefully he can step up and lead this team into the post-season.

Eric Wood

The central anchor of the Buffalo Bills’ scary O-line, Wood has been around longer than most guys on the Bills’ roster and has always been one of the better players in Buffalo. He seems to be focused on winning and since he was a crucial player in Buffalo’s number one ranked rushing attack last season, he clearly has shown that he can find success.

Sammy Watkins

In his first year, Watkins displayed stellar talent proving he would be successful in the NFL. Last year, he proved to be a true star receiver on Buffalo’s offense and that he could be a vocal leader for the team’s newer players to follow. Ideally, Sammy will stay in Buffalo his entire NFL career so why not start making him a captain and give him the reigns of the team. Think of him as the Bills’ very own Larry Fitzgerald.

Preston Brown

Bills’ coaches seem to believe that Preston is ready to really take control of the Defense and become a super-star at the linebacker position. I personally believed he was ready for that last year, but either way he should not be leaving the field when the Bills don’t have the ball. His position revolves around vocalization and being the quarterback of the defense, so its time for him to step up and be the guy.

Kyle Williams

Kyle has been the quiet leader of the Bills’ defense for years and I think he’s got one more year at that position. While I believe this may be his last season in Buffalo, it should in no way mean that his role should be decreased. He has an outstanding football knowledge and experience to help younger pass rushers on the roster plus his knack for getting to Brady is something younger players should learn to do as well.

Stephon Gilmore or Aaron Williams

Stephon Gilmore would be my first choice, but since he may be gone soon, I’d rather have Williams take the captain’s badge if he is to be the longer term answer at Safety. It’s no surprise that Aaron is far more vocal than Stephon, but Gilmore has shown very impressive growth since he’s arrived in Buffalo and it’s something younger players should look at to further improve their own skills.

My hope is that Gilmore can reach an agreement with the Bills for a longer contract very soon to stay in Buffalo to further his stay as the number one lockdown option at cornerback.
