SINGAPORE — Tan Kin Lian, the former NTUC Income chief executive officer who ran for the Singapore presidency in 2011, announced on Friday (11 August) that he intends to contest for the role for the second time at the upcoming election.

The Straits Times reported that Tan, 75, launched his campaign in a media conference at Copthorne King’s Hotel, on the theme of “Bring back trust, give us hope”.

Accompanied by his wife Tay Siew Hong, Tan said during the media conference that he intends to play an active role in carrying out the two key duties of the president. The two key duties are: the use and investment of the reserves, and the approval of recommendations of those to be appointed into the top levels of the public service.

He also intends to use the president’s office to influence policies that would make a better life for Singaporeans.

Fewest votes garnered during 2011 election

Tan contested in the four-way presidential election in 2011 against Tan Cheng Bock, Tan Jee Say and eventual winner Tony Tan. He garnered the lowest number of votes among the four candidates, with 4.9 per cent of the votes, and lost his $48,000 deposit.

On Friday, he introduced Tan Jee Say as his proposer. His seconder is Lim Tean, founder of political party Peoples Voice. Prabu Ramachandran, a former candidate for PV at the 2020 general election, was introduced as Tan's principal election agent.

Tan is the fourth potential candidate to put himself forward for the presidency. In the past two months, former senior minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, entrepreneur George Goh and former GIC investment chief Ng Kok Song had also announced their intentions to run for presidency.
