19-year-old NUS undergraduate dies after Clementi Road junction crash
A 19-year-old National University of Singapore (NUS) undergraduate died after a taxi she was in collided with a car at the junction of Clementi Road and Commonwealth Avenue West on Thursday night (19 April).
Another passenger, a man in his 20s, was trapped in the front seat and had to be extricated by the Singapore Civil Defence Force with hydraulic rescue tools.
The pair was among four passengers, all NUS undergraduates, who were travelling in the taxi when the accident occurred at about 7.27pm.
The four passengers and the drivers of both vehicles, all Singaporeans, were later conveyed to the National University Hospital.
The police said that the 19-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Confirming the incident, an NUS spokesperson told Yahoo News Singapore that one of the students was seriously injured, while the remaining two are in stable condition.
“The university is deeply saddened by the accident. University staff and counsellors are in touch with the family and friends of the four students involved to provide support and assistance. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time,” said the spokesperson.
A video of the incident, posted on Facebook group ROADS.sg early Friday morning, has since gone viral with over 1,500 shares.
In it, a car could be seen crashing into a Premier Taxis’ Silvercab at the traffic junction, and the impact sent both vehicles spinning out of control.
A female passenger in the taxi can be seen hanging limply out of a shattered window, seemingly almost flung out of the vehicle.
Police investigations are in progress.
