Taylor Swift Performs Calvin Harris and Rihanna's 'This Is What You Came For' as Eras Tour Surprise Song in Liverpool

This was a rare performance of the 2016 song by Swift, who co-wrote the track with ex-boyfriend Harris

Taylor Swift is shaking things up — and lightning strikes every time she moves!

For the first time since the start of her global smash Eras Tour, Swift performed a song alone during her acoustic “surprise song” set not originally released under her name — the 2016 hit “This Is What You Came For” by Rihanna and Swift’s ex Calvin Harris.

“Every single time I have an acoustic set, I’m always trying to think of things you might want to hear — maybe things that might be a little bit unexpected,” the pop superstar told the crowd. “Let’s see how we did tonight.”

On the record-breaking Eras Tour, Swift keeps fans on the end of their seat throughout the first three hours of her career-spanning setlist — leaving a spot toward the end of the show for an always-changing pair of songs (often one on guitar and on piano), which fans have dubbed “surprise songs.”

During the guitar performance in Liverpool, she added lyrics from her 2020 song “Gold Rush.” To round out her acoustic set, she played a mashup of the Midnights bonus tracks “You’re Losing Me” and “The Great War” for the audience in Liverpool.

When “This Is What You Came For” was first released in April 2016 — while Swift and Harris were still an item — the songwriting was credited to Harris and the pseudonym Nils Sjöberg, but following the pair’s split that June, news broke that Swift had penned the track under the fake name.

“I wrote under the name Nils Sjöberg because those are two of the most popular names of Swedish males,” Swift later told Paul McCartney in an interview for Rolling Stone. “And nobody knew for a while. I remembered always hearing that when Prince wrote ‘Manic Monday,’ they didn’t reveal it for a couple of months."

The pseudonym appeared again in Swift’s music video for “Look What You Made Me Do,” adorning a headstone in a graveyard, where Swift played a zombified version of herself.

The 34-year-old singer has only played the song twice since it was first released eight years ago: In October 2016, she debuted the song on the piano at the Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, and in February 2017, the “Cruel Summer” singer played the song again at a Super Saturday Night performance in Houston.

2016 was not the last time Swift faked out fans with false naming: On the songwriting credits her sister albums Folklore and Evermore as well as pop sensation Midnights, former beau Joe Alwyn took his songwriting credits under the pseudonym William Bowery. 

But during her Disney+ film Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions, she unveiled the mystery. "There's been a lot of discussion about William Bowery and his identity 'cause it's not a real person," she said. "William Bowery is Joe, as we know."
