A Minnesota teen has been honored by her local sheriff’s office for jumping into action when her mother had a medical emergency while driving.

Abby Foss, 13, of Laporte, called 911 just before 9 p.m. local time on Sept. 28 after her mother, Barbara Foss, became unresponsive while driving down Highway 200 near Kabekona, per a news release from the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office (HCSO).

Barbara and Abby were traveling home after a volleyball game in their community when the incident occurred, according to CBS affiliate WCCO-TV.

“She was kind of steering into the ditch. So I was like, ‘Oh I probably have to steer now,’” Abby recalled. “So I started steering. It was really scary.”

Dispatcher Sydney Weniger told Abby to remain calm as she assisted the teen during the ordeal. Eventually, Abby was able to bring the vehicle to a stop.

Medical staff arrived a short time later and began treating Barbara before she was transported to Sanford Hospital, according to the HCSO.

Barbara said she is proud of her daughter, according to WCCO-TV. "She is very brave,” she explained. “That was a very smart thing to do.”

According to Barbara, doctors believe her low blood sugar led to the incident on the road, according to ABC affiliate KTSP-TV. Though not diabetic, the mother said she now keeps a close eye on her blood sugar levels.

Abby was recently awarded for her bravery following the incident. She even met the dispatcher she spoke with on the scary day.

Weniger said she was impressed with the teen’s composure. "She was so calm,” the dispatcher told WCCO-TV. “I've never had anyone that calm. That's why I thought there was something we had to do, give her an award.”
