Here are the Tely 10 race winners: First time for one, the 8th win for another

Runners took to the streets for the annual 10-mile race from Paradise to St. John's known as the Tely 10 on Sunday,  marking the 96th year for the race.

There were 3,000 runners participating, including professional athletes, regular gym-goers and people who signed up at the last minute the day before. There were just as many bystanders, including family and friends, cheering from the sidewalks.

At Bannerman Park in downtown St. John's, a moment after the 50-minute mark into the race, Callum Drever was the first to cross the finish line.

"First couple of minutes you are not really sure," he said about winning. "[You are] still in a bit of shock, but 30 minutes after, that's when it soaks in."

Drever has been running since he was 10 years old. He says he does four to five races a year.

Coming to the province from Halifax, this was the second time he participated in the Tely 10, following the encouragement of his friends. Last year, he took second place.

He says that this time he knew the course better, including where the hills and turns are, and he was able to prepare himself better.

The four other runners-up in the male category were Mark Greene, Liam Patterson, Ben Collingwood, and Noah Defreyne.

8-time winner

In the female runner category, Kate Bazeley took the win, marking it the eighth time that the mother of three has won first place at the Tely 10.

"I guess we're all just a little bit crazy," she said about why she keeps showing up to the races. "I just love it and love being part of the community."

The four other runners following behind her were Anne Johnston, Janelle Simmons, Maria Chafe and Susan Hayward.

This was the first race Bazeley attempted after a cross-country race in Serbia in March, when she was part of Team Canada.

"I was injured after that, so I didn't resume training then until May," she said.

"I would never miss this race if I can help it…I'm going to build up this summer now for a fall marathon, so this was like a kick in the pants to get it all going."
