Tennessee lineman Savion Herring dismissed from team after domestic assault charge
Tennessee offensive lineman Savion Herring was dismissed from the team this week after he was arrested and charged with domestic assault after an incident on Sunday night, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.
Herring and his girlfriend allegedly got into an argument in a dorm room on Sunday night, per the report, which prompted university police to respond. The woman said Herring grabbed her arm to stop her from leaving and punched her.
Herring denied punching the woman, but he said he grabbed her wrist to stop her from smashing a video game console, per the report.
A team spokesman confirmed that he was then dismissed from the team this week.
Herring, a transfer from Monroe College, had yet to play a game for the Volunteers after joining the program this fall. He is the second Tennessee player to be charged with domestic assault and dismissed from the team so far this season.
Linebacker William Monahan was arrested last month after a woman told police that Monahan was physically and verbally aggressive with her. Monahan allegedly grabbed her by the throat multiple times and initially refused to leave her apartment when asked. The Michigan transfer was suspended from the team and then dismissed earlier this month.
No. 15 Tennessee is set to host Akron on Saturday afternoon. The Volunteers hold a 2-0 record after last week’s 34-27 overtime win against No. 23 Pittsburgh.
