Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has said that a Terminator-style robot uprising might be a real possibility within 10 to 20 years.

Speaking at a security conference in Munich, Schmidt said, ‘All the movie-inspired death scenarios… I can confidently predict to you that they are one to two decades away.

He said, ‘Let’s worry about them in a while,’ saying that he believed the opportunities offered by AI outweighed the risks.

He said that humans would always remain ‘in charge’ of AI, despite fictional portrayals of AI super-intelligences taking over.

Last year Stephen Hawking told a crowd at the launch of The Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence that, ‘Creating AI could be the biggest event in the history of our civilisation. But it could also be the last unless we learn how to avoid the risks.

Professor Hawking said that artificial intelligence could lead to powerful weapons that think for themselves – similar to the robotic assassin in The Terminator.

Professor Hawking said, ‘Alongside the benefits, AI will also bring dangers, like powerful autonomous weapons, or new ways for the few to oppress the many.

Schmidt also warned against leaving AI in charge of human life.

He said, ‘I would not want to be in an airplane where the computer was making all the general intelligence decisions about flying it. The technology is just not reliable enough – there too many errors in its use.

‘It is advisory, it makes you smarter and so forth, but I wouldn’t put it in charge of command and control.’
