South Wales Police have confirmed Ms Martynova, who was known locally as Tania, was in the UK after fleeing Ukraine following Russia's invasion in February 2022.

She arrived in Swansea in July 2022, along with her 13-year-old son.

Her hosts in the UK said in a tribute that her "dream of returning to Ukraine this summer will sadly now not be realised".

"Tania was an impressive woman, multilingual, intelligent, high-flying, hard-working, committed and diligent in her tender care of Illia," they said.

"She was a stalwart of the Ukrainian community in Swansea, playing her full part in all their social and cultural activities, marking the continued defiance of her nation."

Ms Martynova had a "warm and pleasant personality" and was someone who "hugely enriched" lives in Wales, her hosts added.

"Her numerous friends and work colleagues are all devastated by her sudden passing.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Illia here in Wales, and Tania's family back in Ukraine."

Her hosts thanked the emergency services for their care and added that their "hearts are broken".

"Tania became like a daughter to us both. Our tears flow for a remarkable young woman. Ukraine has lost one of its finest."

South Wales Police is appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has dash cam footage of the incident to get in touch.
