The Chase stars Darragh Ennis and Shaun Wallace have revealed the biggest mistake a Chaser can make on the ITV quiz show: jumping in on their co-stars’ specialists subjects.

The pair spilled the beans as they went on ITV’s This Morning ahead of the new series of spin-off show Beat The Chasers, which sees challengers go head to head with not one but six Chasers. Wallace said everyone has subjects they are strong at, with Anne ‘The Governess’ Hegerty being good at literature, Jenny ‘The Vixen’ Ryan excelling at pop culture and Paul ‘The Sinnerman’ Sinha being “good at everything”.

And it seems swooping in on someone else’s category is a Chase no no.

“There was one episode where Jenny very visibly punched Paul,” Wallace said.

“Because he jumped in on one of her special subjects and got it wrong,” added Ennis.

“That’s the big mistake,” Ennis told the show’s hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard. “If nobody knows, you take a guess. But if it’s someone else’s special and you are not sure, you leave it to them.”

“We will always go for the answer if we know it,” said Wallace, who is known as ‘The Dark Destroyer’ on the ITV programme. “But if we are sort of hesitant and it’s a specialist subject…”

Ennis also told how he was a contestant on The Chase before becoming one of the Chasers, revealing that he only signed up for the ITV competition in the first place because he needed a new back door for his house and couldn’t afford it.

“We had got a new house and there was no back door, it was only into the conservatory,” he explained. “It was freezing cold and we didn’t have enough money, we’d just bought a house. So I said, ‘I’ll go on a quiz show and try and win some money’.”

He ended up winning a few thousands pounds, and revealed people online started a fundraiser to help him get the rest of the money for the work he needed done at home.

Then in 2020, Ennis became one of the Chasers on the show, which is hosted by Bradley Walsh. He is known as Darragh ‘The Menace’ Ennis on the programme.
