Here are some of TikTok’s favorite beauty tricks for hot and humid weather

If you’re currently living through a heat wave but still looking for ways to look your best and not melt, TikTok is full of tips to help make that happen.

From ways to keep your skin hydrated to strategies to avoid clogged pores to what type of setting spray to use when you’re sweating, beauty influencers are sharing their favorite products and ways to use them. Here are some of TikTok’s best makeup and beauty tips to help your skin power through summer heat and humidity.

Switch to matte makeup

Beauty influencer Bree (@bree_mcj) shared a tutorial on how using matte foundation can help beat the heat.

Her process includes:

  • Starting with matte foundation (expect to look slightly washed out from the first step!)

  • Topping with a matte setting spray

  • Adding matte pressed powder and setting spray again at the very end

Real Simple explains that matte makeup is more effective in hot and humid weather because it’s formulated without mineral oil or petroleum, so it’s not heavy on the skin and will help absorb sweat, not induce it.

Bree also recommended using less highlighter than normal due to the natural glow you’ll achieve from humidity. She also carries oil- and sweat-blotting paper for wiping sweat on the go.

Apply your products in the correct order

Ale Jay (@alejayofficial), another beauty influencer on TikTok, stressed the importance of using the right lightweight products in the correct order to help your makeup stay on in the heat. For instance, she suggested using a loose powder on top of your primer before adding foundation.

“Doing this will help absorb any excess oil and prevent it from breaking down the foundation,” she explained.

Setting spray is key

Jay and other influencers also stressed the importance of using setting sprays at multiple points in your beauty routine. “SPRAY. EVERY. LAYER,” writes Kaushal (@kaushal).

“It’s about setting every single layer of cream product you use,” she explained. She added that you can also use setting spray between powdered layers, but the idea behind the setting spray is to help your makeup “get meshed up and stuck to your face.”

Glamour also adds that setting spray creates a “shield” for your makeup and acts in a similar way to hairspray for hair to lock the layers into place, which is why it’s especially helpful in humid weather.

Kaushal recommended that makeup users choose setting sprays based on what type of makeup they are using, which she detailed in a TikTok.

Choose lightweight products

Elina (@lovefromelinaa) did a tutorial explaining why the right primer is crucial when wearing makeup in hot and humid weather. She noted that she prefers a lightweight primer that won’t feel “tacky.” If you choose a heavier primer, she recommended adding a lighter amount than usual.

And Cassie (@cassie_did_it), who lives in Texas, says she has “extremely oily skin” and shared what works best for her to prevent her makeup from “sliding.”

Like other influencers, she recommended lightweight makeup products, including primer, setting spray, fixing spray and a lightweight foundation. She also took time to allow each product layer to dry thoroughly during the application, even using a fan at one point.

The right lightweight makeup products can be so crucial in the summer months because they can be breathable, allowing coverage but still preventing makeup from sliding off or seeping into your pores, explains Vogue.

Use skincare that helps with clogged pores

Speaking of clogged pores, skincare influencer Iona Francis @sparklesandskin recommended her “No. 1 skincare tip” for anyone who wears makeup and gets clogged pores in the summer: Cleanse your face as soon as you get home.

“You do not want to be leaving makeup on your face any longer than you need it to be,” she explained.

She also recommended double-cleaning, starting with an oil-based cleanser and finishing with a water-based cleanser. Perform each step for 30 seconds for the best results.

“This massively reduces my clogged pores,” she added.

Don’t forget to hydrate

Last but not least, Victoria P. (@vpofglow) explains that your skin will need adequate rehydration when you’ve been sweating a lot.

Baylor College of Medicine explains that hydrating your skin in sweatier summer months can be especially important because sweat residue can build up on your skin, and some of the cleansers people use to wash can also strip your skin of moisture.

Dr. Chisom Ikeji (@drchizikeji), a doctor who offers health and skin care tips on TikTok, also explains that humidity can actually help improve your skin’s health and appearance. Because high-humidity areas have a lot of water in the air, when your skin absorbs the moisture, the skin becomes more soft and supple.

So if your exposure to humidity is a temporary one, Dr. Ikeji recommends considering a humidifier for your living space to keep your skin supple and using high-quality moisturizing skin care products in between exposures to humid air.
