TikTok girlies are using cherries for blush all summer long: ‘My whole face would swell’

TikTok girlies have clung onto a popular summer activity: Using cherries for blush. The trend, which seems to have first gained traction last summer, has been revived by creators that were eager to try it and document the results.

On July 24, Chelsea Parke (@chelseapkramer) declared that she’d be wearing “cherry blush all summer long” in a 19-second clip that shows her biting a cherry, and then patting the juices on her cheekbones and nose bridge for a sun-kissed effect. Cherries have also been used to achieve an effortless pigmented lip stain.

Cherries are rich in vitamin C and have both a calming and hydrating effect that protects against skin inflammation. In addition to aiding in the regeneration of skin cells, cherry extract can also treat rosacea and acne vulgaris, and protect the skin from sun damage.

Parke also showed her use of cherries as blush a day earlier, in a separate TikTok.

‘Cries in cherry allergy’

While cherries can make for a charming and natural makeup product for some, it may pose risks for others, specifically those that are allergic to them.

“My grandma always did this since the 1940s and she still does!!” @gabyzajacz wrote, to which Parke replied, “Obsessed w her.”

“Lucky you can do that lol My whole face would swell,” @hollydufour195 commented.

“Cries in cherry allergy,” @daniellemayk wrote.

Cherry allergies can be classified into two categories: primary or secondary. According to Very Well Health, “a primary cherry allergy often first appears in infancy and is diagnosed when a person is allergic to the fruit itself” while “a secondary allergy often appears in older children and adults who have an existing primary allergy to pollen.”

Very Well Health also lists the following as common symptoms of cherry allergies:

  • Itchy face, mouth, ears, lips or tongue

  • Face and mouth swelling

  • Itchy ears

  • Hives around the mouth

Less common but severe symptoms include:

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Swelling underneath the skin

  • Severe abdominal pain

  • Gastrointestinal symptoms

  • Anaphylaxis

On July 25, a TikTok creator who goes by the username (@hahafunny7) filmed their “feminine urge to use cherries as makeup.” During the 34-second clip, a little boy, presumably her younger brother, watches her apply the cherries on her cheeks, and even has some blush put on him too.

On July 22, Lea Endys (@leaendys) also shared a video of herself trying the cherry blush trend “because it looks so gorg on everybody.”
