TikTokers and Twitter users are checking out the trending Spill app, but what is it?

Twitter has been in flux in recent months and, in response, users are experimenting with alternatives.

In addition to the just-launched app Threads from sister app Instagram, there’s another so-called “Twitter-killer” app that’s been generating buzz, especially in the Black community.

What is Spill?

Of the recent competitors, one of the most popular ones is the Spill app. Spill is Black-owned and was created by two former Twitter employees, Alphonzo “Phonz” Terrell and DeVaris Brown, who were laid off after Elon Musk bought Twitter. In Spill, users can makes posts with text, video, photos and gifs. The app is still in its early stages, as it’s only available on iOS and requires an invite to join. Still, Spill is gaining steam as a place for Black Twitter to go if they decide to leave Twitter, as it aims to block hate speech and give credit to creators. Blavity also reported that Spill is generating artificial intelligence to help filter out offensive language.

“This will probably be the first, from the ground up, large language content moderation model using AI that’s actually built by people from the culture,” Brown told TechCrunch in December 2022.

Black Twitter has played a major role in defining and creating trends on Twitter, so with a platform meant to uplift the people that drive conversation on the app, users are extremely intrigued. Currently, there is a hashtag on Twitter called the #SpillMigration that is a place for people to talk about their Spill experience.

“It’s definitely a vibe! I hope it lasts,” commented @terilisha.

Spill is on a mission to gain support from Twitter users, but even TikTokers are heading over to the app and having fun.

“POV: this new app is trending and you snatch mother’s username before her,” wrote @idkitsben speaking about Taylor Swift.

He isn’t the only one trying to get in on the ground floor of Spill and take celebrity names.

“I just took phoebebridgers thank you for the inspo,” replied @sophiaxcampanella.

While people are figuring out Spill, there is yet another Twitter competitor internet users should be aware of.

What is the other Twitter alternative Threads?

Instagram released its version of Twitter, calling it Threads. Because the app is directly interwoven with Instagram, users can import their profiles right onto Threads. On the new app, which has a similar feel as Twitter, text posts are limited to 500 characters. On top of that, users can post single or carousel photos — just like on Instagram.

Despite being not even a day old, the early reviews for Threads are extremely positive.

There are a few interesting features with Threads that users are managing. Because Threads is connected to Instagram, users can’t delete the Threads app without getting rid of Instagram — further tying the two apps’ relationship.

Although both of these apps have been in the works for a while, the timing comes at an inopportune time for Twitter — which on July 1 instituted a limit on how many tweets users can see. However, the limit varies depending on if you have Twitter Blue or not, as paying users can see up to 10 times more than normal accounts. Musk said this policy would only be temporary, but that didn’t stop users from being upset. The limit was met with loads of negative backlash, setting up competitors to be a place to go out of spite.

It’s yet to be seen whether Spill or Threads will be able to dethrone Twitter, but users are enjoying themselves on those platforms for the time being.
