TikTok's Bella Brave, 10, 'Shows Us She's Fighting,' Says Her Mom, but 'Not Out of the Woods' (Exclusive)

A viral infection landed Bella in a medically induced coma, but her mom tells PEOPLE “we are holding on to hope”

Bella Thomson — known online as Bella Brave — has shown improvement after complications from a lung infection landed her in a medically induced coma, her mother Kyla told PEOPLE exclusively.

However, Kyla tells PEOPLE, “We are not out of the woods.”

“We are, of course, gutted for Bella. Her bowel transplant last August was supposed to be the last medical trauma she would ever have to endure,” Kyla tells PEOPLE about the transplant, which was due to Bella's rare bowel illness, Hirschsprung’s disease.

“She sailed through that recovery faster than any child with a bowel transplant has, and finally she could be free of hospital stays.”

However, earlier this week Kyla shared that Bella, 10, had been admitted to Toronto's SickKids hospital, dealing with complications from a viral infection in her lungs — which caused her to be intubated and placed in a medically induced coma.

“Now, to see her fight for her life from an unknown cause that the best of the best in the world at SickKids are trying to understand, is heartbreaking,” Kyla tells PEOPLE.

However, she shares that “two days ago they were preparing us for her not to survive. But today, they’ve told us she’s shown she is fighting and actually shown improvements!”

Kyla continues: “We are not out of the woods, this could take weeks but we are holding on to hope for her and never letting go. She’s showing us she’s fighting and she will make it out of this.”

The TikTok star shot to viral fame as she, mom Kyla, and dad Lyle documented her spunky personality amid her ongoing struggle with life-threatening health challenges, including her bowel disease and severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID).

Kyla has been resharing supportive messages from fans on her Instagram Stories, and added that she and Bella's father, Lyle, “talk to her, I play music for her and we are reading her all the cards, letters and messages you’ve all sent.”

“We are praying and believing we have stopped the fibrosis attack on her lungs, in enough time, that still allows her lungs to heal & function again. This wait is beyond unbearable.”
