Chalamet told us that he had to do “a lot of practice” for the film, and gave praise to his collaborators who made him able to “do the impression of someone who can sing and dance.”

From Barbie and Harry Potter and Paddington franchise producer Heyman and Paddington director King, the origins story sees Chalamet in the titular role of the enigmatic candy maker Willy Wonka. Grant plays a scene-stealing Oompa-Loompa named Lofty.

King told Deadline about plans for future films. “There’s a few irons in fires,” he said. “I think the character could absolutely take exploration, but let’s see how tonight goes – and then we’ll make 17 sequels.”

Wonka starts its overseas rollout on December 6, with 37 markets in the first wave including the UK, Brazil, Mexico and China. More offshore markets added the following week, and it gets to North American theaters on December 15.
