Timothée Chalamet’s ‘Wonka’ To Launch On Max In March As Warner Bros. Discovery Works On “Refreshing And Reigniting” Streaming Content

Wonka will start streaming on Max next month, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said today, outlining what he called a strong streaming content slate highlighted Warner Bros. films, including one of last quarter’s most successful theatrical releases amid some disappointments.

Zaslav noted the date speaking to investors on a call after quarterly earnings, which were mixed as the company engineers a slow turnaround.

Also coming to Max from Warner Bros., he noted, are Aquaman And The Last Kingdom on Feb. 27, and Dune: Part Two “this spring,” said Zaslav — no date. The Dennis Villeneuve sequel opens next week after being pushed from its opening last year due to Hollywood strikes.

Wonka, which opened in December at $39 million, has passed $211 million at the domestic box office and $608 million worldwide. The musical fantasy origin story of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka, is directed by Paul King, who co-wrote the screenplay with Simon Farnaby.

The Color Purple debuted on the streamer earlier this month. “Bottom line,” Zaslav said, “The studio had really been underperforming, including the end of the year. We had a real struggle.” Upcoming 2024 titles he touted – The Watcher, Beetlejuice 2.

Overall, Zaslav said, “we’re excited to be refreshing and reigniting our content pipeline at Max.” The fact is, the strikes really slow down production. And we didn’t have as much content as we wanted for Max, and we’re now moving forward with a great slate.” Other new films on the streamer will come from a multi-year output deal with A24.

On the TV side, True Detective was just renewed for a fifth season with Issa López after reaching a series high for the last installment Night Country, starring Jodie Foster. The House of the Dragon season two is coming this year followed by DC’s The Penguin series and spinoff Dune: The Sisterhood.

New seasons of The Last Of Us, Euphoria and The White Lotus are coming in 2025.

In 2026, a Harry Potter series:. “We’ve not been shy about our excitement,” Zaslav said. “The last film was made more than a dozen years ago.” He said he and his team “were in London a few weeks ago, and we spent some real time with JK [Rowling] and her team. Both sides are thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead We can’t wait to share a decade of new stories with fans around the world on Max. We’re aiming for a debut in 2026.”
