SINGAPORE — Singapore archer Syahidah Alim was knocked out of the women's individual compound open competition at the Tokyo Paralympics, after suffering a surprise loss to a lower-ranked opponent at the Yumenoshima Final Field on Monday morning (30 August).

The current world No.2 was beaten 136-140 by Turkey's world No.7 Sevgi Yorulmaz in the 1/8 elimination round, and failed to advance to the quarter-finals.

"I am disappointed with today's results. We have trained hard for the last five years and I expected more from myself," Syahidah said after the loss.

"Together with my coach and the team, we'll take some time to reflect and to analyse the performance. Looking at the bigger picture, this is a small setback to what we want to achieve. We have made progress in the last few years and we are moving in the right direction."

This is Syahidah's second Paralympics outing after she reached the quarter-finals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Laurentia Tan fifth in the dressage individual freestyle test

Over at the Equestrian Park, equestrienne Laurentia Tan, riding her horse Banestro, finished fifth in the dressage individual freestyle test (Grade I) competition with a score of 75.060 per cent.

The 42-year-old, who was the first Singaporean to win a Paralympic medal back in 2008, had qualified for the competition as the fifth-best equestrienne in the individual test event on Friday.

The United States' Roxanne Trunnell, who won the individual test gold, was again triumphant in the individual freestyle test with a score of 86.927 per cent. Latvia's Rihards Snikus (82.087 per cent) took the silver, while Italy's Sara Morganti (81.100 per cent) won the bronze.

The result means that Tan was unable to add to her four-medal career haul for a second straight Paralympics, after she also finished empty-handed at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. She had won two bronzes at the 2008 Beijing Games and a silver and a bronze at the 2012 London Games.
