‘The Who’s Tommy’ Sets Broadway Closing Date

It’s nearly game over for The Who’s Tommy: The Tony-nominated musical revival will end its Broadway run next month, press agency Boneau/Bryan-Brown said today. The musical will have played more than 130 regular performances at the Nederlander Theatre when the final curtain falls on July 21.

The well-reviewed production from Tony-winning creators Pete Townshend (music, lyrics, book) and Des McAnuff (direction, book) was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical at the Tony Awards this month but lost to Merrily We Roll Along starring Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez.

Townshend joined the company to play “Pinball Wizard” during the Tonys telecast on June 16.

Based on The Who’s seminal 1969 rock opera Tommy, the show stars Ali Louis Bourzgui as the titular boy who witnesses his dad shoot a romantic rival and is relegated to staring endlessly into a mirror. Relegated to staring endlessly into a mirror, he is transformed by his “crazy flipper fingers” into a pinball legend and becomes a guru to his “disciples.” The cast also includes Alison Luff, Adam Jacobs, John Ambrosino, Bobby Conte and Christina Sajous as The Acid Queen.

The album and show is rife with rock classics including “Pinball Wizard” — which Elton John remade into a mid-’70 No. 1 smash — “See Me, Feel Me,” “Acid Queen,” “I’m Free” and “We’re Not Gonna Take It.”

The Who’s Tommy opened on March 28 and will begin a national tour in Providence, RI, in fall 2025. The original production ran from April 1993-June 1995 at the St. James Theatre, winning five Tony Awards including Best Original Score for Townshend and Best Direction of a Musical for McAnuff. It lost Best Musical to Kiss of the Spider Woman.

But there's just one problem: 'Swiftonomics' is not real.""I decided to do a case study in Stockholm. Stockholm is one of the places where Taylor Swift has already come through. The concerts were in May. We already have some real numbers. And I thought Sweden would tell us if this benefit is actually there. And you know, there is a benefit. Something like 180,000 people attended her three concerts in Stockholm, and that generated about 850 million Swedish crowns of revenue, that would be about $81 million.""That sounds like a lot of money, but it's actually not. Even for a fairly small city like Stockholm, that's not a huge benefit. It's a good weekend for Stockholm. It's an OK-ish weekend for Sweden.""We looked at inflation as well.
