Top 10 Tips for Selecting Live Band

Music is an integral part of every wedding. From sangeet ceremony to baraat, music and dance holds an important place in the Indian weddings. Other than DJs and recorded music (and the ever favourite shehnai), wedding celebrations now even include live musicians and singers. So, if you are planning to book a live band for your wedding, here are top ten things you should keep in mind.

1) Genre of music

Select the kind of music that you would like to hear at the wedding. But, if your choice is hard rock or Metallica, then it is best to keep them at bay. For weddings, you should choose entertaining and romantic music, which would enhance the mood of celebration and enjoyment.

2) The suitability of venue

Provide appropriate environment for the musicians to perform properly. There should be enough space for them to set up their instruments and amplifiers. Along with this, keep in mind that their equipment must not be exposed to weather elements like sun, mist, fog, etc. Also, make sure that your venue has enough space to accomodate the number of musicians you are planning to hire.

3) Power supply

Electric instruments need constant power supply. Provide the musicians with an uninterrupted power supply, so that your mood of merriment never goes down.

4) Right acoustics

Certain musicians prefer hardwood floors and less decorated walls, so that the sound can echo and amplify itself naturally. Heavily decorated and carpeted floors tend to absorb the sound, and thus the need for better amplifiers arise.

5) Ceremonial music

There are different rituals that take place during a wedding, so make sure that the music matches with the feel of these rituals. Loud cheerful songs along with mantra chanting may seem mismatched. But, a soft number playing in the background as the couple exchange rings will just add to the romance in the air.

6) Engage expert musicians

Engaging expert musicians who are well seasoned with respect to wedding etiquettes and ceremonies has its own merits. Expert musicians have knowledge of manipulating their music and score according to different wedding environments. Also, make sure that your musicians are professional enough to reach the venue on time.

7) Time limitation

Let the musicians know about any probable overtime or extra equipment that may be required from their side. During the peak wedding seasons, professional musicians have more than a single appointment scheduled in a day. So, they may not be able to entertain last-minute overtime requests.

8) Book them well in advance

Last moment hustle-bustle may result in miscommunication of time, venue or other important details. Moreover, your favourite band may not be available on that day. So, it is always good to select and book a band at least 2 months in advance.

9) Discuss the money

Most of the live bands have their rates set beforehand, but that should not stop you from negotiating a good deal for yourself. Remember if you are booking a band in the off-season, then you can negotiate a bit more than the usual peak season charges. Discuss what all is included in the charges, like travelling and equipment costs etc. Also, it is a good idea to seal the deal on paper as soon as all the details are decided.

10) Care for your musicians

It is part of basic etiquettes to provide your musicians with food and drinks. So, even if there is no formal mention of it in the contract, it is still implied. Also give the musician a break in between a few numbers to take a small breather.
