Top Gear star Richard Hammond has responded to whether the show will be back on air after the current hiatus.

Production on the motoring show, more recently hosted by Chris Harris, Freddie Flintoff and Paddy McGuinness, was suspended after Flintoff was injured on set of the 34th season.

Speaking about Top Gear being off the air indefinitely, Hammond, who hosted the show with James May and Jeremy Clarkson, told Radio Times: "I very much doubt it. Top Gear was on hiatus when we took it on so it'll come back one day, although in what shape I don't know."

"The decision to buy our next car is probably the most significant contribution we can make as individuals to the future, so we need to be informed. Maybe that's the route it could take?" Hammond continued.

The presenter also touched upon whether his current show The Grand Tour, which he co-hosts with May and Clarkson, will continue.

"As for shows like The Grand Tour, I don't think the human desire for adventure is ever going to be sated. It'll continue in different forms, modified to suit its time," Hammond said.

As for Top Gear, the BBC released a statement in March 2023 — more than three months after Flintoff's car crash — in which they announced season 34 would be cancelled.

"Under the circumstances, we feel it would be inappropriate to resume making series 34," the message read.

"We have sincerely apologised to Freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery.

"We understand this [halting the show] will be disappointing for fans, but it is the right thing to do, and we'll make a judgement about how best to continue later this year."

As to whether the show will return on air, a BBC spokesperson told Digital Spy in October last year: "A decision on the timing of future Top Gear shows will be made in due course with BBC Content."

Top Gear episodes can be streamed on BBC iPlayer.
