The Only Way is Essex star Ferne McCann has looked back at her life since joining the ITV show, and on reflection has admitted that she was not ready for the fame it brought her.

The media personality joined the constructed reality show in 2013, before competing in I'm a Celebrity and Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, getting her own fly-on-the-wall series about parenthood and now launching a business with her fiancé Lorri Haines.

Speaking to OK! in a lengthy interview, Ferne said: "It's definitely a case of be careful what you wish for. I always wanted that limelight and for people to know who I was and I was never shy about saying that, growing up. It makes me feel uncomfortable now, knowing what I know.

“I wanted it all, but that's come with a price which I really wasn't prepared for," later adding that she was "tangled up in this bitchy character I'd created."

"It was draining and it wasn’t rewarding because I wasn't well-liked," she said. "Looking back, I was emotionally immature and my mental health was at an all-time low. There were days I didn't want to get out of bed, I was in such a bad place."

Looking at her life on the whole, however, she thinks it was all worth it, stating: "Even though I've had my ups and downs, it’s that whole butterfly effect. Would I be sitting here now pregnant with my second baby and about to launch my own business with my partner without having made the decision to go on that show? It's all part of the journey."

“And while I can't say I was prepared," she continued, "I do feel like I've been completely de-shelled and everything now feels very pure and purposeful. I believe everything – good and bad – unfolds exactly the way it should."
