Patterson becomes Everton’s second signing of the window already, with Ukraine left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko having arrived from Dynamo Kyiv last week.

The deal is worth £10m plus add-ons.

Romelu Lukaku will return to the Chelsea squad for tomorrow night’s Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg showdown with rivals Tottenham.

The Belgian striker was dropped completely for Sunday’s Premier League draw with Liverpool after the airing of a Sky Sport Italia interview conducted a few weeks earlier in which he complained about life at Stamford Bridge and his usage by Thomas Tuchel as he also voiced a desire to return to Inter Milan in future.

But Lukaku apologised to his manager during clear-the-air talks held at Cobham yesterday and Tuchel has confirmed at his pre-match press conference this afternoon that Chelsea’s £97.5m record signing will be back in contention to face Spurs at Stamford Bridge.

“First of all we were even in the background happy that we took the time that it needed to look calmly on it and talk calmly,” said Tuchel.

“He apologised and is back in the squad for today’s training. For me the most important thing was to understand and clearly understand and believe that it was not intentional.

“He did not do this intentionally to create noise in front of such a big game. And it’s the very first time even he has behaved like this.”

Premier League clubs eye shock Eriksen swoop

Christian Eriksen expects to begin training with a European top-flight team this month, and Premier League clubs are showing an interest in the former Tottenham midfielder.

Eriksen’s contract with Inter Milan was terminated last month because Italian regulations prevent him from playing in Serie A because he is fitted with an internal defibrillator.

But, following after a series of medical tests, Eriksen has been cleared to resume his career and he can sign for a new club as a free agent.

His agent Martin Schoots told the Daily Mail: “It is going really well for Christian. He had all the checks just before Christmas and the results were so good that we expect him to be involved in a group training with a team some time later in January.

“Although Christian’s position will not be affected by the January transfer window as he is a free agent, we are looking at the second half of this month.”

Maitland-Niles cleared to leave Arsenal

Lukaku was dropped from the squad altogether for Sunday’s key showdown with Liverpool, but is reported to have held positive, conciliatory talks with manager Thomas Tuchel yesterday.

Arsenal face competition in their bid to snap up Borussia Monchengladbach star Denis Zakaria.

The Gunners are strongly linked with a move for the soon-to-be available midfielder, whose contract expires in the summer.

Manchester United and Liverpool are also linked but Daily Mail now claim Aston Villa are keen on a move for the Switzerland international.

Fiorentina marksman Dusan Vlahovic has given an update on his future amid links with Arsenal, Tottenham, Real Madrid and several top clubs.

He told Russian outlet Politika: “I've said it several times so far.

Wolves kick off at Old Trafford at 5.30pm having last played on December 19 due to several positive tests.

Roma make Maitland-Niles bid

The Athletic are reporting that Roma have tabled a formal offer for Arsenal midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

They say the deal would contain an option-to-buy, with the Serie A side keen to bring the England international in on a permanent basis but not in a financial position to do so during this window.

Whether Arsenal would sanction his departure at this stage remains to be seen, however, with central midfielders Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny both having headed to the AFCON.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has suggested the club will wait until the end of the season before making their move for Kylian Mbappe.

Asked whether Real could try to get a deal done early, Ancelotti said: “I don’t know. We think we will continue to fight for titles.

Lukaku to meet with Tuchel today

Speaking after the draw with Liverpool yesterday, Tuchel said he would also consult senior players before deciding whether to bring Lukaku back into the fold ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Tottenham.
