Everton have now officially confirmed the arrival of Nathan Patterson from Rangers.

The Scotland right-back, 20, has put pen to paper on a long-term deal at Goodison Park that lasts until 2027.

Patterson becomes Everton’s second signing of the window already, with Ukraine left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko having arrived from Dynamo Kyiv last week.

The deal is worth £10m plus add-ons.

Patterson told evertontv: “I’m over the moon to sign for Everton and looking forward to getting started.

“It was an easy choice to sign. This is a massive club with huge history and the fanbase is tremendous.

“Obviously we aren’t in the place where we want to be right now but we can definitely get there with the talent in the changing room and staff here, and I have full belief we can do that.

“It is really exciting to come to a club that has huge talent in the team. I am going to work my socks off and hopefully I can do well with them in training and in games.

“It was also great for me knowing the manager (Rafael Benitez) really wanted me here and that made my decision.

“When a club really wants you, it makes your mind up early on. I wanted to come here from the very start. I’m delighted to be here and really looking forward to playing in front of the fans at Goodison.

“Long-term, I want to nail down a starting position and win some trophies to make the fans proud.”

“I cannot predict the future,” said Tuchel. “I do not know if his representatives talk to other clubs. Of course, it is possible now because it is January and he has not signed yet. As I understand it, we are in communication with him, the club is in communication with him.

“I know he is very aware how I appreciate to work with him. The point is very clear, the club is trying the very best and there are communications going on.”

Here’s more from Tuchel on Lukaku, including the latter’s need to take personal responsibility to limit the damage caused by his explosive interview:

“It’s not that big as maybe people want it to be, but it’s also not small,” said Tuchel.

“But it is small enough to stay calm, accept an apology and to move on forward. He’s very aware of what happened and what he created and he feels the responsibility to clean the mess up.

“Maybe we will have a bit of smell still from it of course. He can handle it, but he also has no other choice.

“He cannot expect everybody to be super happy the very next day.

“But he’s still our player and we have good, good reasons and a lot of reasons to make him play for us, and to convince him and to fight hard that he’s our player. We’re happy he’s our player, we will protect him.”

Lukaku BACK in Chelsea squad for Tottenham clash, Tuchel confirms

13:56 , George Flood

Romelu Lukaku will return to the Chelsea squad for tomorrow night’s Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg showdown with rivals Tottenham.

The Belgian striker was dropped completely for Sunday’s Premier League draw with Liverpool after the airing of a Sky Sport Italia interview conducted a few weeks earlier in which he complained about life at Stamford Bridge and his usage by Thomas Tuchel as he also voiced a desire to return to Inter Milan in future.

But Lukaku apologised to his manager during clear-the-air talks held at Cobham yesterday and Tuchel has confirmed at his pre-match press conference this afternoon that Chelsea’s £97.5m record signing will be back in contention to face Spurs at Stamford Bridge.

“First of all we were even in the background happy that we took the time that it needed to look calmly on it and talk calmly,” said Tuchel.

“He apologised and is back in the squad for today’s training. For me the most important thing was to understand and clearly understand and believe that it was not intentional.

“He did not do this intentionally to create noise in front of such a big game. And it’s the very first time even he has behaved like this.”

13:15 , George Flood

News of an exit from Liverpool this afternoon.

Left-back Tony Gallacher has left Anfield for the Scottish Premiership’s bottom side St Johnstone, penning terms until 2024 at McDiarmid Park.

The former Falkirk youngster was unable to break into the first-team squad after joining Liverpool in 2018 and spent part of last season on loan at MLS outfit Toronto FC.

“I’m really excited about my move to St Johnstone and can’t wait to get started,” Gallacher said.

“I had a great time at Liverpool and I’d like to thank everyone there for looking after me and helping me to improve as a footballer and teach me so many good habits.

“I feel very lucky to have been part of a massive football club with so many wonderful professionals and people. It was an incredible education.

“But I felt the time was right to look for first-team football and an exciting opportunity presented itself at St Johnstone.

“Having been out on loan at Toronto, I enjoyed my time there and it made me want more and more first-team football.

“It’s now up to me to show everyone at St Johnstone that I’m good enough to play regular first-team football and that’s what I plan to do.

“My preference is to play on the left-hand side as I feel I have good energy to get up and down and can deliver crosses into the box. I also enjoy the defensive side of the game.”

Premier League clubs eye shock Eriksen swoop

12:56 , Giuseppe Muro

Christian Eriksen expects to begin training with a European top-flight team this month, and Premier League clubs are showing an interest in the former Tottenham midfielder.

Eriksen’s contract with Inter Milan was terminated last month because Italian regulations prevent him from playing in Serie A because he is fitted with an internal defibrillator.

But, following after a series of medical tests, Eriksen has been cleared to resume his career and he can sign for a new club as a free agent.

His agent Martin Schoots told the Daily Mail: “It is going really well for Christian. He had all the checks just before Christmas and the results were so good that we expect him to be involved in a group training with a team some time later in January.

“Although Christian’s position will not be affected by the January transfer window as he is a free agent, we are looking at the second half of this month.”

Arsenal transfer latest

10:12 , George Flood

With the January window now in full swing, Standard Sport’s team of football writers will be offering the latest transfer guides to all of our clubs throughout the day.

First up, it’s Simon Collings on Arsenal...

Arsenal’s business in the January transfer window is likely to be defined by who leaves the club this month.

The future of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is very uncertain and the striker has not played since being stripped of the captaincy last month.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles is a target for Roma, who want to sign him on loan, while left-back Sead Kolasinac is likely to leave too.

Strikers Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are out of contract in the summer, making now the last chance to cash in on them, but Arsenal are unlikely to sell the pair given their shortage of alternative options up front.

(Arsenal FC via Getty Images)

Fellow forward Folarin Balogun, however, will leave on loan to a Championship club.

Arsenal would prefer to do their business in the summer, when they want to sign a striker and central midfielder. Strikers Alexander Isak, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jonathan David and Ollie Watkins have all been scouted.

Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has been watched also. Juventus forward Dejan Kulusevski has been offered to Premier League clubs and could act as loan cover, if Aubameyang leaves.

West Ham ready to launch new Lingard bid

Plenty of West Ham transfer gossip flying around at the moment as David Moyes targets new additions this month to try and sustain an unlikely Champions League qualification push.

According to The Express, West Ham are now ready to table another bid to secure the return of popular former loanee Jesse Lingard.

Moyes reportedly hopes that United will be willing to offload the England midfielder - who has played just 88 minutes of club football all season - for a cut-price fee of around £10m, rather than lose him for nothing when his contract expires in the summer.

09:16 , George Flood

Could former Arsenal favourite Aaron Ramsey make a return to the Premier League?

The Welsh international has fallen down the Juventus pecking order under Max Allegri and is now being linked with a sensational move to Newcastle.

Reports in the Daily Star claim that Ramsey is personally trying to negotiate an exit from Turin and is seen as a potential ideal signing to bolster Eddie Howe’s struggling midfield at St James’ Park.

Ramsey has 18 months left to go on his £230,000-a-week deal at Juve, but Saudi-backed Newcastle now surely won’t have an issue in terms of matching those figures.

Lukaku to meet with Tuchel today

Monday 3 January 2022 08:57 , Malik Ouzia

As for what we know for sure regarding Romelu Lukaku’s future, the forward is set to hold a crucial meeting with Thomas Tuchel today.

Speaking after the draw with Liverpool yesterday, Tuchel said he would also consult senior players before deciding whether to bring Lukaku back into the fold ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Tottenham.

“I don’t take decisions in the office or around my thoughts,” Tuchel said. “I take decisions for the team and I listen to them.

“I hear their opinion, what they think and then I make my decisions once I hear them out. It is their club, their team and it is not a personal thing from me to decide only on my thoughts.

“We have a squad who we protect, which is strong in belief and behaviours. This is how we take decisions, not only this time, but we regularly speak to the five or six players to get their opinion and inside view.

“We want a clearer understanding of the situation and take a decision on a bigger foundation.”
