Trip down memory lane for Indian actors making their mark in Hollywood

Irrfan Khan's THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN which is going to be released on 29th June would mark his graduation and acceptance as one of the finest actors to have ever been a part of the Hollywood saga. The maxim is being put forward as SPIDERMAN has evolved into a brand which has a universal acceptability and to be able to be a part of this brand which would make him a recognizable face all over the world would certainly push his envelope to be considered for meatier roles in Hollywood.

Irrfan Khan has been acting for quite some time in the Hollywood films, but these films were more of arty types or had a background of Indian sub-continent where he played the role of the Indian character. Be it THE NAMESAKE, DANIEL PEARL, or THE SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE the underlining linkage about the roles was the Indian connection. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN could strictly speaking also be a part of this category, but difference lies in the fact that here the setting is not that which has an Asiatic flavor but it has a pan-world favor.

On the eve of the release of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, it would indeed be the perfect moment to run a trip down memory lane and bring into relief the role played by various actors from Hindi cinema from time to time in the films produced from Hollywood.

Anil Kapoor: Anil Kapoor announced his arrival in Hollywood scenario with a hit film SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL, where he acted alongside Tom Cruise and also was instrumental in bringing Tom Cruise to India.

Bipasha Basu: Bipasha Basu's name has also started making waves with SINGULARITY. It is directed by Rolland Joffe, and has the background of Anglo-Maratha war. The story of film centres around four characters and Bipasha Basu is one of them.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: Though she has been making waves at Cannes International Film festival, her acting debut in a Hollywood film PINK PANTHER-2 was one of the most disastrous debuts that was attempted by an Indian actor from the sub-continent.

Amitabh Bachchan: Big B is also going to make his acting debut in Baz Luhrmann's THE GREAT GATSBY where he enacts the role of an shady businessman Meyer Wolfsheim. Big B would be doing the film gratis as he has written it on his blog. The role enacted by Big b however would be small.

Mallika Sherawat: She has been making news in the media circles about her roles in Hollywood but her debut in HISS was a disaster. Even the director of the film Jessica Lynch went on record to criticize her role.

Freida Pinto: She is the real success story who has made herself big after her role in SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE and has also graced various fashion magazines and with her role in RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, a big budget action flick, she has shown potential to be accepted in the mainstream roles in Hollywood.

Apart from these recent entries into Hollywood actors of the likes of Amrish Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Saeed Jafri, Persis Khambatta, Shashi Kapoor etc., have had their flirtations with Hollywood. One only hopes that with more and more actors getting an opportunity to act in films in Hollywood it would open a new era of cooperation between two giants-Hollywood and Bollywood in entertainment business.
