This is a pretty strong showing for True Detective, which returned for its fourth installment five years after the Season 3 debut. It’s not entirely accurate to compare Night Country‘s performance to Season 3, considering it was released before the launch of Max.
To help put the numbers into perspective, The White Lotus Season 2 debuted with 1.5M cross-platform viewers, while Euphoria managed 2.4M for its Season 2 debut. The final season of Succession came out of the gate with 2.3M for its premiere episode.
It’s also not uncommon for HBO series to put up a significant amount of viewership as the season progresses. According to the company, episodes of The White Lotus and Euphoria Season 2 ultimately grew to around 15.5M and 19.5M viewers per episode, respectively. Succession saw similar average audience growth during its final season.
On streaming, HBO says that True Detective was the top overall title on Max in the week leading up to the premiere of Night Country, suggesting that viewers were catching up on previous seasons in preparation.
Here’s the official logline for the new iteration: When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.
The cast also includes Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc and John Hawkes. Guest stars are Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, June Thiele, Diane Benson and Joel D. Montgrand.
