Tsitsipas vs Murray LIVE!

Stefanos Tsitsipas fought off Andy Murray to silence a partisan Centre Court crowd with a superb 7-6(3) 6-7(2) 4-6 7-6(3) 6-4 victory in a gripping Wimbledon second-round match. The 24-year-old Greek trailed by two sets to one after Murray edged three tight sets on Thursday night before Wimbledon's curfew halted play mid-battle.

As the match resumed in sparkling sunshine on Friday fifth seed Tsitsipas showed incredible composure to edge a tense fourth set on a tiebreak after both players had been rock solid on serve. The 36-year-old Murray, who had hip-resurfacing surgery in 2019, finally began to look weary in the fifth and Tsitsipas broke Murray's serve for the first time in the match.

Tsitsipas forged ahead and despite squandering a couple of match points at 5-4 he made sure at the third time of asking with a booming ace. Read Dom Smith’s Wimbledon blog below!

Tough to take

19:19 , Dom Smith

Andy Murray admitted in his press conference that defeats at Grand Slams since coming back from his hip injury woes have been tougher to take because of how close many of the matches have been.

Is there anything more gutting in tennis than a five-set defeat when you led the match?

Full credit to Tsitsipas, though, who was astonishingly good.

Murray gutted when hearing about incorrect umpire call

19:09 , Dom Smith

Murray did not challenge when one of his shots was called out at 4-4 in the fourth set when he was 15-30 up on the Tsitsipas serve. It would have given him two break points in a set he eventually lost 6-7 — and was only discovered to have been called wrong by the chair umpire after the match.

When Murray was told of the wrong call by the umpire in his post-match press conference, his face fell and he admitted his frustration that the umpire would miss a critical call when “no more than a couple of metres” away from the shot in question. For the 36-year-old, another reason — besides his outstanding performance, and last night’s curfew seeing the match paused — to ponder what might have been.

Will Murray continue?

18:55 , Dom Smith

Andy Murray asked in his press conference whether he will play at Wimbledon next year.

“Motivation is a big thing and continuing having early losses here doesn’t really help with that”, he admits. “Last year I had a long think about things, spoke to my family and decided to keep going.

“I don’t plan to stop right now.”

What a match

18:35 , Dom Smith

The fine, fine margins.

Just two breaks of serve in the entire match. An epic.

GAME, SET and MATCH TSITSIPAS

18:22 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 Murray

That’s it. Sir Andy Murray is out of Wimbledon.

After Tsitsipas goes two set points up, Murray saves the first by coming out SWINGING. Judy and Kim on their feet applauding, like the rest of Centre Court.

Murray then gets a stern serve back over net and the Greek misses.

At deuce, Murray makes a critical error to try and lob Tsitsipas as the Greek smacks the ball down for one more match point. He takes it. Murray is deflated, dejected and gutted.

A warm embrace at the net between the players. Probably not the best of friends, but mutual respect, I’m sure, for what physical and emotional toil they have just been through.

What a stupidly good match of tennis. Wow.

Murray must now break Tsitsipas’s serve!

18:11 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 7-6(3) 5-4 Murray

Tsitsipas has the edge for the first point, but Murray claws back the second and then serves two free points for 40-15.

He wins the game by chasing down Tsitsipas’s latest drop-shot and then inviting a simple return which he bats away.

He must now break Tsitsipas’s stupidly good serve if he is to stay in this match.

Worrying signs for Murray

18:08 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 7-6(3) 5-3 Murray

Tsitsipas puts the first shot just long, offering up the first point to two-time Wimbledon champion Murray, before Murray hits the tramlines and Tsitsipas is back level.

It’s then huge, huge serving from the Greek to turn the game on its head and bring up 30-15.

Tsitsipas has the game wrapped up with ease from there. That was the first game which really and truly passed Murray by. He looked so frustrated with himself and lethargic through that.

Murray back to one game behind

18:03 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 7-6(3) 4-3 Murray

It’s a net shot for Murray with the first point, causing groans around Centre Court, but then Tsitsipas nets and it’s level again.

Murray looks to the turf as his forehand lands inside the tramlines. Huge roar from the crowd to spur him on at 15-30 down.

It works as Murray wins a drawn-out point for 30-30. Tsitsipas misses twice. Game Murray.

Tsitsipas edges ahead 4-2

17:57 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 7-6(3) 4-2 Murray

Tsitsipas swings the ball up wildly to put Murray 0-15 up on the Greek’s serve. But it’s then a slammed serve for 15-15.

And then another for Tsitsipas who is able to put away a simple winner when Murray somehow gets it back over the net. Ace Tsitsipas for 40-15. Game Tsitsipas.

Important hold for the Scot

17:54 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 7-6(3) 3-2 Murray

Murray edges ahead 40-0 on serve with Tsitsipas not really in the game. He then delivers a second serve out wide which Tsitsipas nets.

It’s 3-2 Tsitsipas as two more games pass by on serve, but Murray must look to break here with the fifth set in danger of getting away from him.

Tsitsipas holds serve

17:50 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 7-6(3) 3-1 Murray

Murray makes a desperate Hawkeye challenge at 15-15 but knows in his head and his heart that he’s missed. By a long way too. Tsitsipas goes 30-15 up, with Murray now in a battle as much with himself as with the world No5.

Tsitsipas puts two outstanding aces down to extend his fifth-set lead to 3-1.

MURRAY BROKEN

17:46 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 7-6(3) 2-1 Murray

Oh dear. Real jeopardy as Murray goes 0-30 down on serve with Tsitsipas lobbing him as he tucks the ball right into the corner.

Murray could really do with an ace, but his first serve hits the net. Then he produces a rare double fault that brings up 0-40. It’s a mammoth task not to be broken now.

Groans as his misses his first serve again, but Tsitsipas shoots the ball up wildly. 15-40; Murray celebrating.

He pushes the ball to the right of the court a number of times before swinging it to the left and darting for the net. Tsitsipas nets and Murray has saved two of three break points.

However, Murray nets and looks down with utter dejection. It’s the first time in the match Murray has been broken. A repeat of his five-set defeat to Tsitsipas at the 2021 US Open seems on the cards now.

1-1. Tsitsipas back on terms

17:39 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 7-6(3) 1-1 Murray

It’s looking like a hold to love for Tsitsipas until Murray claws one point back.

But Tsitsipas forces Murray to net, and it’s deja vu. 1-1. Not another set like this. Surely...

Murray wins first game of fifth set

17:37 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 7-6(3) 0-1 Murray

Murray responds to the disappointment of heading into a fifth set by winning his first service game to love.

Top serving

Set Tsitsipas. Decider needed

17:33 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 7-6(3) Murray

Tsitsipas wins the first point, firing past Murray who looks shattered and gives up the chase.

It’s then a thwack of a serve for 1-1, before the net helps Murray out and it stays on serve thanks to his smash volley at the net.

Murray returns an outstanding Tsitsipas serve but Tsitsipas is one shot too good. 2-2. Murray is then in real mental anguish as his next return of serve drops beyond the baseline. Off goes his cap, up go his hands in frustration.

Ace Murray. Excellent response. Change ends, but not before “Let’s go Andy, let’s go” rings around Centre Court.

Murray then loses a mini break after the longest rally of the match so far. Amazing commitment but Tsitsipas with the final touch. Then Murray nets for 5-3 Tsitsipas. 6-3, what a serve Tsitsipas.

Then Murray fires into Tsitsipas, but the Greek is braced and wins the set by finding the line. Decider needed.

Hold to love for Murray. TIEBREAK TIME

17:22 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 6-6 Murray

The game starts off with Murray’s excellent serve returned well by Tsitsipas, but Murray puts away a lovely shot into the corner which the Greek is nowhere near to.

Former world No1 Murray is then sent right to back of the court by a great Tsitsipas shot, but Murray tucks the ball past him beautifully. 30-0.

The next serve flies up off the frame of Tsitsipas’s racket, bringing up three game points. He takes the first with a stellar serve.

Wow. Tsitsipas with some stunning shots

17:18 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 6-5 Murray

Tsitsipas is just too cute for the first point, down the line for the winner.

The Australian Open finalist goes 30-0 up and then fires wide, but there’s no way back for Murray as an ace makes it 40-15. He then arrows an outrageous winner down the line to win the game. Sheer quality from the Greek.

5-5. What a set.

17:15 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 5-5 Murray

Murray nets while off-balance as he loses the first point. A stunning serve is marginally out and Murray challenges it but wrongly. He then scoops a lovely find over the net which Tsitsipas can’t catch up with, and then his unreturned serve does return a cry of his own: “LET’S GO.”

Tsitsipas misses thanks to the unbecoming tape. Murray has levelled it again for 5-5.

Tsitsipas holds

17:10 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 5-4 Murray

Murray is 15-0 and 30-15 up in this game on Tsitsipas’s serve and there are roars from the crowd as Murray loses a point to go 40-30 down as they try desperately to will him on.

Tsitsipas eventually wins the game as Murray hits the tape when right close up at the net. He whacks his racket against the net in anger, before sitting down for a change of ends. 5-4 to the Greek.

Vintage stuff at the net from Murray

17:04 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 4-4 Murray

Murray is able to put away a nice smash volley as he edges ahead 15-0 on his serve. He then hits a wiry shot that creeps over the net. Doesn’t look intentional but appears to have worked as he puts away another neat swing for 30-0.

It’s then precision tennis as both players look for the corners, but Tsitsipas is imprecise at the end of a great rally, only finding the tramlines. 40-0.

Well crafted point from Murray. Vintage stuff at the net in this set. Game Murray.

Top quality game

17:00 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 4-3 Murray

I was just starting to wrack my brains and think of a double fault from either player in this match — and then Tsitsipas produces one before firing long. Murray senses a chance at 30-30.

Murray gets a monstrous serve back over but loses the point. Tsitsipas and Murray are then sprinting all over the place but the Greek plays the smartest shot possible — tucking the ball into the one corner of the court Murray can’t get to. Game Tsitsipas.

An important hold for Murray

16:57 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 3-3 Murray

Murray did earn himself a few scraps to feed off in Tsitsipas’s last service game, but he doesn’t offer any up to Tsitsipas on serve here.

Tsitsipas tries a drop shot again, but Murray gets there and makes it 30-0. The Scot has always been one of the fastest players around the court.

Magnificent serving from Murray makes it 40-15, and from there he levels it up in the fourth set.

3-2 Tsitsipas

16:52 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 3-2 Murray

Tsitsipas offers Murray 15-15 and 30-30 chances, but Murray is unable to capitalise as the Greek doesn’t put a foot wrong at those moments.

On serve still.

Murray survives an arduous service game

16:47 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 2-2 Murray

Great serve Murray to begin with, immediately followed by a really poor net miss.

Judy Murray at one side of the box and Kim at the other are then clapping as Murray attacks aggressively at the net and puts a backhand volley away down the line.

Murray appears to be struggling a little with the sun in his eyes, twice aborting a service throw in this game. But from 30-30, he gets himself up to the net well to bring up a game point.

Tsitsipas gets a net shot of his own which he nonchelantly taps over. Deuce. Murray under pressure.

Top serve for advantage Murray, but one mid-rally shot of his is then weak and Tsitsipas brings it back to deuce.

Excellent second serve for another advantage. Tsitsipas nets. On level terms again.

Really good serving again from Tsitsipas

16:38 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 2-1 Murray

There is an amazing Murray shot in this game to bring up 15-15, when Tsitsipas tries to drop-shot him but Murray gets there and slams the ball away cross-court.

An ace makes it 30-15, before Murray makes an unforced error into the net for 40-15. Ace for the game. Superb from the world No5.

Murray responds

16:35 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 1-1 Murray

Murray starts strongly with an unreturned serve, then sends Tsitsipas right into the edges of the court to make it 30-0. A miss from Tsitsipas brings up 40-0 to Murray. Murray just misses with his fourth serve when some in the crowd thought it was an ace.

But on second serve, Tsitsipas hits the tape and misses and Murray holds really well.

Tsitsipas with a strong hold to start

16:32 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6, 1-0 Murray

Despite an incorrect challenge from Tsitsipas when he claims Murray’s shot was out but in fact it was in, the Greek is able to show his big serving once more.

It’s a comfortable hold for Tsitsipas who gets the first game under his belt after the restart.

The players are out and warming up

30 seconds to go in the warmup as the match prepares to restart...

Murray v Tsitsipas is next!

16:15 , Dom Smith

Alcaraz wraps it up in straight sets: 6-4, 7-6, 6-3. He’s into the third round.

That means Murray v Tsitsipas for what is left of an awesome match is up next on Centre Court.

Alcaraz just doing an on-court interview at the moment.

Centre Court update

15:59 , Dom Smith

The match is due to be completed second on Centre Court this afternoon, after world No1 Carlos Alcaraz has finished his match against Frenchman Alexandre Muller.

Alcaraz is currently two sets up and winning the third set 4-3 with Muller currently serving.

Seedings and ceilings

15:28 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas is the world No5 and the fifth seed at Wimbledon this year. Murray, meanwhile, is ranked No40 in the world.

The Greek’s best Grand Slam performances were runs to the final at the 2021 French Open and the Australian Open earlier this year.

Murray is, of course, a two-time Wimbledon champion and also won the 2012 US Open.

Stat attack

15:13 , Dom Smith

Andy Murray played to an exceptional level in all three sets last night, especially considering he is 36, the oldest player in the world’s top 50, and has a metal hip.

But whereas his first serves were 60 percent accurate over the first two sets, a stonking 86 percent of them found their way into play in the third set. That was when he played his best tennis.

Match report (so far)

14:59 , Dom Smith

Andy Murray rolled back the years last night on Centre Court. Neither player deserved to lose the first set, but perhaps it was just-about merited that Tsitsipas got over the line in the tiebreak, with his serving and his flat forehand smashes just a little cleaner than Murray’s.

But the Scot rallied and despite falling down with suspected cramp and yelping out as he attempted to serve out for a two-sets-to-one lead, he recovered and won the third set. He now leads 2-1 and both sets he won, he was the marginally better player for.

Standard Sport’s sports correspondent Matt Majendie was sat just in front of me on Centre Court, watching on.

Here is his match report so far.

Recap

14:42 , Dom Smith

It was a scintillating start to the match late last night under the roof on Centre Court. However, after a night’s sleep and with the roof now fully off on the best weather day of the Championships so far, will Andy Murray dip or raise his level?

He leads Stefanos Tsitsipas (3)6-7, 7-6(2), 6-4 after the first three sets.

Play suspended

Thursday 6 July 2023 22:45 , Dom Smith

After the most dramatic moment — Murray winning the third set one point after collapsing in agony — the chair umpire announces that this match will be completed tomorrow.

Boos inevitably follow. Murray leads (3)6-7, 7-6(2), 6-4.

WHAT HAVE I JUST WATCHED

Thursday 6 July 2023 22:41 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-6 Murray

Andy Murray moves a set up!

His opponent slaps the ball into the net to put 2015 Davis Cup winner Murray 30-0 up. Murray’s wife Kim offers a standing ovation as Murray gains three set points.

He slices wide with the first, wrinkling his face as he turns away in disappointment.

He misses the first, and then the second the ball flies past him and he yelps out in agony.

It looks as though Murray is injured, but he recovers to win the set on the next point. He’s 2-1 up

Tsitsipas holds and Murray is a hold away from taking the third set

Thursday 6 July 2023 22:32 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 4-5 Murray

Okay, Tsitsipas holds, but look at Andy Murray, 36, metal hip and all, go! At 30-0 down on the Tsitsipas serve, he wins a superb point while rooted by his opponent to the baseline as Tsitsipas mis-hits into the net.

Then Murray is level at 30-30 with a brilliant net shot.

But Tsitsipas is not thinking about losing the third set — least of all while serving. 4-5.

Hold to love for Murray

Thursday 6 July 2023 22:29 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 3-5 Murray

Murray’s first serve sends his opponent tumbling and stumbling for 15-0. Then Tsitsipas lobs Murray which leads the Scot to miss in the tramlines.

The chalk flies up as Murray moves ahead thanks to a textbook ace, and then he’s denied another as the ball is adjudged to have just clipped the tape.

He serves cleanly for 40-0, and then even more cleanly to hold to love. There haven’t been too many of those on Murray’s serve. The Murray chants are out.

Tsitsipas makes light work again

Thursday 6 July 2023 22:24 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 3-4 Murray

It’s another hold of serve made to look very simple indeed for Tsitsipas, as the 24-year-old puts a couple of neat winners away to nudge himself back into contention in the set, just one game behind Murray.

Tsitsipas’s forehand truly is something to behold.

Murray holds to stay two ahead

Thursday 6 July 2023 22:22 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 2-4 Murray

At 40-15, Tsitsipas plays a lob over Murray. Murray swivels on his axis and cannons the ball into the net.

A second-serve ace sees Tsitsipas beaten and Murray 4-2 ahead in the third set. His first-game break remains.

Tsitsipas holds

Thursday 6 July 2023 22:19 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 2-3 Murray

A hold to love for Tsitsipas, who moves 3-2 behind in this third set. Murray made a meal of the last game, but the Greek was in a rush there.

What a game! Murray holds

Thursday 6 July 2023 22:14 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 1-3 Murray

The fourth game is started by Tsitsipas finding the line with a ridiculously powerful forehand, before Murray replies with an ace.

Tsitsipas challenges one of his own shots, which turns out to be miles out, yet recovers to swing a bullet backhand into the very far reaches of the court to earn a break point.

Murray shows his steel with a stirring ace that flies past his opponent, before smacking an overhead volley down and away for advantage.

He loses the first, before Tsitsipas turns on the style once more to bring about a second break point.

Murray saves it one a mammoth point, and then edges advantage ahead again with another ace down the T. After an unreturned serve, Murray cries “let’s go” and moves 3-1 ahead in the third set.

Tsitsipas holds

Thursday 6 July 2023 22:03 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 1-2 Murray

Murray comes so close to an extraordinary point but narrowly misses as Tsitsipas makes it 30-0.

It’s a couple of disappointing points from there are Murray nets to confirm Tsitsipas is off the mark in the third set.

Tsitsipas needed that, to reassert his say in the last few minutes. The players head for a drink before changing ends.

Murray holds to make it 2-0 in the third

Thursday 6 July 2023 21:59 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 0-2 Murray

Murray converts his break of serve into real exchangeable cash as he holds serve. He is left punching the air. Tsitsipas to serve as he tries to claw it back.

WE HAVE A BREAK OF SERVE

Thursday 6 July 2023 21:56 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7, 0-1 Murray

Murray brings up 0-40 on Tsitsipas’s serve thanks to some uncharacteristic errors from the world No5.

From the fourth point of the set, Tsitsipas nets after a really tense and testing rally. It’s the dream start to the second set for Murray. What an opportunity now.

Here we go again...

Thursday 6 July 2023 21:53 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas is booed as he comes back from a long toilet break. It’s like the 2021 US Open all over again...

MURRAY LEVELS IT UP AT ONE SET ALL

Thursday 6 July 2023 21:48 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), (2)6-7 Murray

An ace for Murray is the perfect start to the tiebreak, but he is then caught lingering at the back of the court and Tsitsipas dinks a winner over the net which Murray is powerless to chase down.

Hang on a minute, though. Tsitsipas nets, and the mini break is Murray’s.

He backs it up with a top serve. 3-1 to the 36-year-old, playing a man 12 years his junior. Then 4-1 with another clean serve.

There are cheers at 4-1, but Tsitsipas puts away an outstanding winner for 4-2. Then a change of ends...

...And then the full break is Murray’s as Tsitsipas nets mid-rally again — and then AGAIN on Murray’s serve to bring up THREE set points for Murray.

He only needs one though — his serve not returned by Tsitsipas. Before the ball has bounced, Murray is roaring and Centre Court is standing to applaud his effort.

Another tiebreak!

Thursday 6 July 2023 21:41 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), 6-6 Murray

Tsitsipas clips the net and the ball lands out as Murray moves to 30-30 and within a couple of points of breaking the Greek.

But Tsitsipas hasn’t come this far to become the first player to be broken. He holds for 6-6. Tiebreak again.

Hold to love for Murray

Thursday 6 July 2023 21:37 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), 5-6 Murray

That’ll do Murray the world of good. He holds to love as he edges 6-5 ahead in the second set. If he can break Tsitsipas here — no easy task, evidently — he’d be on terms at one set all.

Murray getting closer to breaking?

Thursday 6 July 2023 21:33 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), 5-5 Murray

Murray claps a magnificently precise crosscourt winner from Tsitsipas. Then Murray does one of his own to make it 30-30 and for a second or three I can hardly hear myself think among the cheers.

Murray senses his moment, but Tsitsipas — who has entered the men’s doubles with his brother Petros and the mixed doubles with his girlfriend Paula Badosa — holds firm and kills any hope of a first break of the match.

Winner from Murray as the Scot edges ahead again

Thursday 6 July 2023 21:28 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), 4-5 Murray

Very seldom is Murray beaten by a drop shot just over the net, but Tsitsipas played a peach to make it 15-15 in the ninth game of the second set.

A couple of points later and Tsitsipas misses the baseline marginally. The next point sees the Greek have the final say in a rally in which both players were sent flying round the court by the other. Elite tennis. Murray holds his nerve, and his serve. Again.

Tsitsipas squares it up once more

Thursday 6 July 2023 21:23 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), 4-4 Murray

There’s a big roar from the crowd when Tsitsipas goes long with the first point on his serve and it’s 0-15 Murray. The Greek has given so little away on his serve so far that Murray, and indeed the British-majority crowd, are feeding off scraps.

Fabulous rally to make it 30-15 Tsitsipas. Two aces and it’s another hold. 4-4. Not sure I can handle another tiebreak, but we might get one...

4-3 Murray in the second set

Thursday 6 July 2023 21:20 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), 3-4 Murray

We’re far enough into this match now that vintage Andy is back. He’s celebrating every point he wins and cursing himself for every shot he misses.

A smart hold with Tsitsipas barely in the game makes it 4-3 to Murray. Amazing to have played 19 games now and none have been breaks of serve.

What quality is on show here!

Thursday 6 July 2023 21:16 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), 3-3 Murray

It’s getting a bit ridiculous quite how high the quality of tennis is. Stefanos Tsitsipas is a feisty competitor but is supposed to be much harder to play on clay or hardcourt. No sense he is weaker on grass today, though.

Meanwhile, Murray is 36, the oldest player in the men’s top 50, and has a metal hip.

Murray turns 40-0 down into deuce, but it’s two quick points from Tsitsipas and he’s home and dry. For this game, anyway. Murray to serve.

Quick hold Murray

Thursday 6 July 2023 21:09 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), 2-3 Murray

After Tsitsipas slips to concede the opening point, there are audible gasps right around Centre Court as Murray nets a seemingly straightforward high-volley putaway.

Murray recovers to bring up two game-points, but he only needs one as he slams an ace down the T for a quick hold of serve.

2-2 as Tsitsipas holds

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), 2-2 Murray

Murray wins a stellar point when returning a deliberate body serve from Tsitsipas. Murray tries to lob Tsitsipas, whose smash-attempt reply hits the metal of his racket and presents the chance for Murray to plunder a winner down the line.

It’s the only point the Scot wins, though, in another comfortable service game for the world No5.

Another long game, but Murray holds

Thursday 6 July 2023 21:01 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), 1-2 Murray

Still no breaks in this match! Murray hits the net midpoint to go 15-0 down on serve, but Tsitsipas wildly blazes the ball high towards the closed roof for 15-15.

It’s 30-15 Murray when the two-time Olympic singles gold medalist strikes a beautiful winner — and then Tsitsipas digs out a reply that only finds the net.

Tsitsipas has Murray running all over the place to chase down the fifth point, which the Greek wins, and soon it’s deuce with Tsitsipas really pushing.

But Murray kills the game with a lovely deft net putaway.

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), 1-1 Murray

A pretty long game that, but in the end Tsitsipas holds via a break and makes it 1-1 in the second set. Slightly dampened atmosphere in Centre Court at the moment. The crowd still coming to terms with Murray losing the first set.

Murray wins first game of second set

Tsitsipas 7-6(3), 0-1 Murray

Murray serves first in the second set and doesn’t look too dejected despite losing a set which neither player deserved to lose in a million years.

After Tsitsipas clips a lax backhand into the net, Murray wins the game by losing just a point. Good start from the Brit.

First set Tsitsipas

Thursday 6 July 2023 20:46 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 7-6 (3) Murray

That was some absolutely outstanding serving from both players. Wow. They’re on serve at 3-3 when they take a drink and change ends.

Then the first point after they change ends sees Murray serve for a marathon point, only for Tsitsipas to get bored halfway through and fire a ferocious winner down the line. Mini break to Tsitsipas.

He backs it up on serve twice to make it 6-3, and Murray’s body language just begins to quiver a jot.

Then an even longer point is eventually won by the Greek, who takes the first set JUST, on a tiebreak score of 7-3. The fine, fine margins.

Murray wags his finger at his box in frustration. How can he respond now?

Tiebreak!

Thursday 6 July 2023 20:37 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 6-6 Murray

What a game that was; we’re headed for a tiebreak. Murray wrongfoots Tsitsipas for the first point, leaving the Greek slipping on the turf and looking at the grass in disgust. After a failed dink which clips the net and misses and then a stunning Tsitsipas winner, Murray is able to use the crowd’s cheers to force a tiebreak on deuce after a pulsating first set.

Tsitsipas hooks the ball into the air twice, but Murray slams it down on the volley for 40-30. During first deuce, Murray challenges Tsitsipas’s shot on the baseline but it has just, JUST clipped the line. Advantage Tsitsipas.

Murray ROARS when Tsitsipas sends a reply wide, looking up at his box and clenching his fists. He wins on advantage and forces a tiebreak.

Tsitsipas with another strong hold

Thursday 6 July 2023 20:28 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 6-5 Murray

That was a stunning game from the Greek. An aace for 15-0, Murray fires wide crosscourt for 30-0, then into the net for 40-0, and soon it’s game Tsitsipas with an arrowed winner into the corner.

Murray must hold here to force a tiebreak.

Murray 0-30 down by holds again

Thursday 6 July 2023 20:25 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 5-5 Murray

This time it’s Tsitsipas with a great call to one-up the line judge when Murray’s very first serve is wrongly called in.

Murray goes 0-30 down and faces peril at that point, but gets himself back to 30-30 with some big serving. Tsitsipas senses his moment, yet Murray gives him nothing and fires a blistering ace past him for 40-30.

Tsitsipas fires the ball long after a decent rally and Murray holds again. 5-5. So tense and so tight, as expected.

Tsitsipas holds again for 5-4

Thursday 6 July 2023 20:21 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 5-4 Murray

Tsitsipas really serving well in this first set. There is a point in the middle of this ninth game which Murray wins with a fantastic no-look backhand volley at the net, but it’s the silver lining in another tough game. Tsitsipas leads 5-4 and would win the first set if he breaks Murray here.

Stellar serving again from Murray

Thursday 6 July 2023 20:18 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 4-4 Murray

The world No40 is really growing into his service game as this first set progresses. A few really good serves there see him back level at 4-4. Tsitsipas to serve next.

Tsitsipas proving quite the immovable object at the moment

Thursday 6 July 2023 20:14 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 4-3 Murray

Murray brings up 15-30 on Tsitsipas’s serve thanks to the Greek’s shot clipping the net and then bouncing into the tramline. But Murray then finds the net, and from there it’s two simple points for Tsitsipas to wrap up the seventh game — in both cases slamming a winner down the line after Murray just about returned his first serve.

Great call from Murray

Thursday 6 July 2023 20:10 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 3-3 Murray

Andy Murray has been competing at Wimbledon for long enough to know the Hawkeye system inside out, and makes an excellent challenge — with Tsitsipas’s shot originally deemed in shown to have indeed been out. That brings up 30-0, and then it’s 40-0.

Tsitsipas a bit cuter with the next point, but then a couple of slices are shared between the players and Murray finds the side of the court where his opponent isn’t. 3-3.

No breaks just yet

Thursday 6 July 2023 20:06 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 3-2 Murray

Tsitsipas has perfected that slammed serve out wide from the right side of the court across to the left. He’s produced a couple of aces there now and uses that shot to good effect again...

There’s a superb passed shot by Murray for 40-30 in the middle of that fifth game, but to no avail from the two-time champion’s perspective. The level of tennis already has been outstanding, particularly from Tsitsipas.

Strong hold from Murray!

Thursday 6 July 2023 20:02 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 2-2 Murray

Four unreturned first serves were just what Murray needed there are suffering a taxing first service game and the full force of his opponent’s serve in two games so far.

Great display of serving from the Scot. On serve still.

Rampant from Tsitsipas

Thursday 6 July 2023 19:59 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 2-1 Murray

Tsitsipas showing four different ways to win a point there.

A smashed volley for the first, a fierce forward down the line for the second, an ace for the third and then a Murray unforced error for the fourth. Hold to love for the Greek. Tough start for Murray.

Murray with an important (but long) first hold

Thursday 6 July 2023 19:56 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 1-1 Murray

Really important that Murray was able to hold there.

The crosscourt forehand he sent wide for 0-30 worried the crowd here, but his strong game at the net same him come through the game. It was certainly not an exhibition of the Scot’s greatest serving, with only his final first serve in — hence how crucial it was that he was not broken. On serve.

Excellent start from Tsitsipas

Thursday 6 July 2023 19:49 , Dom Smith

Tsitsipas 1-0 Murray

There’s a piercing silence at the beginning of this eagerly anticipated match. Tsitsipas with a comfortable hold to start it off.

Brilliant serving, some fiery forehands, and Murray only earned a single point in that one. Strong start from the Greek.

Here we are then

Thursday 6 July 2023 19:43 , Dom Smith

The players are out for their warm-ups, and they walked onto Centre Court to be met with rapturous applause from the supporters inside the ground. Real sense of anticipation here.

Who’s the favourite?

Thursday 6 July 2023 19:35 , Dom Smith

It feels such a tough question to answer. Tsitsipas is fifth seed and the world No5, but struggles on grass.

World No40 Murray, by contrast, plays his best tennis on this surface and says he feels his best for seven years. He’s a two-time Wimbledon champion, two-time Olympics champion, and former US Open and Davis Cup winner. That has to count for something, right?

What a tight, tense, nervy occasion it could be. But that might just bring the swashbuckling best out of both players. Both, after all, are entertainers.

It’s next up...

Thursday 6 July 2023 19:27 , Dom Smith

Here we are then. Murray and Tsitsipas are next on Centre Court after defending women’s champion Elena Rybakina saw off dangerous French player Alize Cornet 6-2, 7-6. Rybakina won 78% of the points in which her first serve was in. Murray could do with a bit of that this evening.

He and Tsitsipas are due on next.

First Round recap

Thursday 6 July 2023 19:19 , Dom Smith

For Stefanos Tsitsipas, it was a more testing first-round opponent and thus a much more gruelling first-round match.

He came through five sets against Dominic Thiem, the Austrian former World No3 desperately trying to force his way back into the big time after a woeful few years with injury.

Tsitsipas won 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 and afterwards allayed any potential spice left in his match-up with Murray, insisting: “He’s someone that I respect. He has done great things in tennis. I’m looking forward to this match.”

First Round recap

Thursday 6 July 2023 18:43 , Dom Smith

Andy Murray got his Wimbledon campaign under way on Tuesday — beating fellow Brit Ryan Peniston 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 on Centre Court.

He was watched on by the likes of Roger Federer, David Cameron, and the Princess of Wales as he produced his second-most efficent Wimbledon victory of all time. Trickier affairs will come (such as this evening), but it was quite the statement victory by the Scot.

Still this calm six hours on, Andy?

Thursday 6 July 2023 18:33 , Dom Smith

Well, six hours ago he seemed relaxed and ready for this. A lot of time has passed now though. With Murray next on Centre Court, will he be composed or overcome with nerves?

Head to head

Thursday 6 July 2023 18:24 , Dom Smith

While fifth seed Tsitsipas and two-time Wimbledon champion Murray are regulars at the top level, they have actually only met twice before on the tour.

36-year-old Murray has one win over Tsitsipas, while the Greek has one victory of his own: that 2021 US Open meeting. It’s well teed up, this...

Toilet tensions

Thursday 6 July 2023 18:19 , Alex Young

Murray and Tsitsipas have previous, of course.

Two years ago, tensions over toilet breaks nearly hit boiling point.

Tsitsipas won a feisty five-set epic between the duo at the 2021 US Open in which Murray was riled by the length of the Greek’s toilet breaks.

The Briton later vented his frustration on social media, saying that it was quicker for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to get into space than it was for Tsitsipas to take his bathroom break.

The world no5, though insists his toilet row with Andy Murray is in the past.
