Two-car trains make debut on Sengkang LRT

The Sengkang loop of the Sengkang-Punggol LRT service will get eight new two-car trains to ease peak hour congestion.

Sengkang residents can expect the two-car trains during the morning and evening peak hours, at three to four minute intervals, said a joint release by the Land Transport Authority and SBS Transit on 5 Jan.

This is an upgrade from the previous one-car trains, which could accommodate up to 105 passengers. The new two-car train can hold up to 204 passengers at one time, said the release.

“The two-car system was successfully tested during off-peak hours from 21 December 2015. SBST staff will also be on board the two-car trains in the next few weeks to attend to any technical problems promptly,” it said.

SBS Transit currently has a fleet of 41 train-cars for the LRT system, and is adding another 16 to the Sengkang-Punggol LRT fleet by the middle of this year.

The Punggol loop of the LRT system will be get a two-car system in the first quarter of 2017.

Sengkang’s LRT system consists of 14 stations, including Sengkang, and segregated into eastern and western loops. Sengkang is located in the middle of the two loops.
