One of the two people charged with murder in a fatal shooting last September was in court earlier this week on 28 unrelated charges, including sexual assault, assault with a weapon, sexual offences against a minor, attempted obstruction of justice and firearms offences.

On Wednesday, police announced that Robert Matthews, 25, and an 18-year-old were charged with second-degree murder in the death of Jordan Jacques-Vetten, 33. He was killed on Sept. 9 in Calgary's northwest community of Capitol Hill.

Police say there is no known relationship between the two accused killers and the victim.

On Monday, Matthews was in court as a judge denied him bail on six sets of charges unrelated to the homicide.

Investigators say they were first called to the 1700 block of 18th Avenue N.W. around 3:50 a.m. on Sept. 9 after neighbours reported gunshots.

When police arrived, they found a male in medical distress in front of a home. He died shortly after.

Court records show that on Sept. 11, two days after the fatal shooting, Matthews is accused of fleeing police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, mischief and uttering death threats.

It is unclear if the flight from police and the homicide are connected. He was already facing three sets of charges before the homicide.

No contact between accused

The two accused killers appeared in court on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old was a youth at the time of the shooting so he can't be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

His case was put over for two weeks after prosecutor Scott Wilson told Youth Court Justice Diana Mah the Crown is preparing a "huge amount of disclosure" for defence.

Brian Goldsworthy, the teen's lawyer, indicated he would be seeking a bail hearing as quickly as possible. Goldsworthy pointed out his client's mother and aunt were in the courtroom to support the teen.

Matthews also made a brief appearance and will be back in court next week as he secures a lawyer. He has been banned from having any contact with his co-accused.
