Two endangered Asian lion cubs added to Night Safari

Two endangered Asian lion cubs joined the pride at the Night Safari, bringing the total to 12.

Born on 27 September, the male and female cubs were mircochipped and vaccinated during their veterinary checkup in late November.

A separate subspecies from the African lion, the Asian lion is smaller in size and sports a less significant mane compared to its African cousin.

It is listed as endangered under the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.

Most of the wild Asian lions can be found in India’s Gir Forest, a protected sanctuary where there are about 300 of these animals. About 340 of them live in zoos.

The cubs are currently spending some bonding time with their mother at a house facility but will be added to the Asian lion exhibit along Night Safari’s tram route in the upcoming months.
