U2's The Edge Reveals Rule That Keeps His 22-Year Marriage to Morleigh Steinberg Going Strong (Exclusive)

"Keep falling in love," the musician told PEOPLE at the Venice Family Clinic's inaugural HEART Gala

The Edge knows how to keep his relationship strong!

On Saturday, May 11, the singer-songwriter, 62, and his wife of 22 years, Morleigh Steinberg, caught up with PEOPLE and dished on the secret to being married for over two decades as he was honored at the Venice Family Clinic’s inaugural HEART Gala.

"I think compatibility and friendship is a huge thing for us," The Edge, whose real name is David Evans, said. "We fell in love, but we knew each other well, and I would say keep falling in love. It doesn't happen just once. It keeps happening."

Steinberg — a choreographer, dancer and filmmaker — agreed with the sentiment. "It's true," she said.

The couple was presented with the first-ever HEART Award during Saturday's event, a result of their contributions to the Venice Family Clinic — which provides "comprehensive, high-quality health care, free food, health insurance enrollment assistance and harm reduction services" to over 45,000 people, per its website.

"It is so incredible to be here and for such an amazing cause to be honored in this way," The Edge said. "I mean, it's humbling, and we're just so delighted to be able to help in whatever way we can. We're such big supporters of the clinic. It's so important."

Steinberg, who grew up in Venice, added that the honor was "a dream," and that she and her husband were "just so happy that we can help."

Other members of U2 have been open about their own family lives in recent months, including Bono. During an appearance on the Kelly Corrigan Wonders podcast earlier this week, the musician revealed that his family didn't speak about his mother after she died when he was 14.

As Bono shared, he got "very few details about my mother" Iris and wrote his 2022 memoir Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story to "hook some of those memories out of that river."

"And I thought, I don't want my memories of my mother to pass me by completely. And they were getting less and less and less," Bono, whose real name is Paul David Hewson, said, adding that his brother Norman didn't have many memories either, despite being 7 years older than him.

"That's because when she died I was 14, and my father just didn't speak about her," Bono continued. "We didn't speak about her. Very Irish male situation. So I can't really recall how she spoke. I remember feelings though."

Back in April, fellow band member Adam Clayton and his wife of 10 years, Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho announced they had "amicably divorced," a U2 spokesperson told PEOPLE at the time.

"Both will continue to be fully involved in the care of their daughter and they request that the family’s privacy be respected," the statement read, referring to their daughter Alba, 6½.
