Ukraine mourns as rescuers clear rubble from missile-hit Kyiv children's hospital
The Ukrainian capital maintained a day of official mourning Tuesday as rescuers desperately combed the debris at a Kyiv children’s hospital that was destroyed in a missile strike. Amid international condemnations, Russia said the medical facility was hit by Ukrainian anti-missile attack. A UN monitoring mission in Ukraine said the hospital was likely hit by a Russian missile.
Rescue workers cleared debris as Ukraine observed a day of mourning Tuesday, after Russian strikes shattered a children's hospital in Kyiv and sparked international condemnation.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said 43 people were killed across Ukraine by a barrage of nearly 40 missiles that targeted several towns and cities early Monday.
Officials announced a day of mourning in the capital with flags at half-mast and entertainment events postponed, as cranes and first responders worked at the Okhmatdyt paediatric hospital.
"The rescue operation after yesterday's Russian missile attack continues," Zelensky wrote on social media, adding that patients from Okhmatdyt had been transferred to other facilities.
"We continue our work to increase the protection of our cities and communities from Russian terror. There will be decisions. The world has the necessary strength for this," Zelensky added.
Zelensky said rescue work was ongoing at several of the attack sites and that patients from Okhmatdyt had been transferred to other facilities.
