US National Gallery of Art to receive 250-work donation

Some 250 works of contemporary art are being donated to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the US museum announced Friday.

The gift is from American collector and former art dealer Virginia Dwan, 81, and includes 34 sculptures, 15 paintings, as well as prints and drawings, photographs, films and a set of artist books.

The collection features leading names in postwar abstraction, nouveau realisme, minimalism and land art.

Some of the pieces are by Americans Robert Smithson, Dan Flavin and Sol LeWitt, as well as France's Yves Klein.

"The pledge will significantly strengthen our holdings of art from the 1960s and 1970s," museum director Earl Powell said in a statement.

The donation will be the subject of a 2016 exhibition, when the museum's east wing, currently under renovation, reopens.
