Liverpool were beaten in their final Europa League group stage game for what they hope will be a long time on Thursday night.
Jurgen Klopp named the youngest lineup in the club’s history for the trip to Union Saint-Gilloise having already secured progress into the knockouts as group winners.
With a huge Premier League clash with Manchester United to come, the table toppers opted to leave big-hitters in Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker and Trent Alexander-Arnold at home.
As a result, it was hard to draw too many definitive conclusions from the result. The Reds lacked much in the way of cohesion or attacking intent but that was surely to have been expected.
Jarell Quansah was perhaps the standout as the defender continued his breakthrough campaign with a first senior goal after Mohammed Amoura had opened the scoring.
Cameron Puertas, however, scored what proved to be the winner just before half-time.
The result was not enough to take USG through into the knockouts, with Toulouse following Liverpool in second place.

Liverpool sit top of the table but there are still a number of injury concerns for Jurgen Klopp to deal with.
Having edged past Fulham after a late turnaround, Liverpool came from behind to beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, as Harvey Elliott's stoppage-time winner left them leading the way in the Premier League after Arsenal then fell to defeat against Aston Villa.
Klopp had Alisson back in goal against Palace, with the Brazilian recovering from injury, but Alexis Mac Allister and Diogo Jota were not fit to return for Liverpool.
